17-35 F2.8L

I've seen a 17-35L 2.8 fairly cheap 2nd hand (£375) and wanted to buy it for someone as they want a wide angle. I know it's a fairly old lens, but can I get your opinions on whether it's worth buying at this price?

That seems like a good price. As for the lens I've heard so so things about it. There's a good comparison with the new version (16-35) here. As you can see the newer one is considerably better. Unless you really need the extra stop the 17-40 would be a better lens for the same price.

This is what I intend to find out, I have heard it's in good condition, so...

I've also seen a 300 F4L for £420 in not good cosmetic condition but perfectly good optical and mechanical condition...temptation is a terrible thing.
