Ok i'm feeling slightly better about the 17-40L now, managed to snap a few test images in the front garden. The following are the full images, then 100% crops of the area where I tried to focus. Both are at F4.
100% crop is "as is", no sharpening, no jpeg compression.

17mm F4:

40mm F4:

And one more 100% crop at 31mm F4:

They look perfect :)

Ok maybe i'm just paranoid :)

I'm still a bit stuck as to what I should do with my kit bag. I currently have:

Sigma 10-20mm
Canon 17-40 F4 L
Canon 70-200 F4 L
Canon 50mm F1.8

I still think that the 17-40L is a bit short for it to be my main lens, and I wouldn't mind something faster than F4 in a zoom in the sub-100mm range.

If I'm keeping the 17-40L and 10-20mm (and I think I might), then I don't want to spend £750 on the 24-70mm F2.8. Oh I don't know. Maybe i'll just stick to using the 70-200L as my 2nd zoom along with the 17-40L. :p

That or try the Tamron 17-50 F2.8, and if that's anygood then I can ditch the 17-40L. Think i'll be happy then :D
