Currently use a Viewsonic VX715 monitor @ 1280x1024 but often find than I am taking fire from distance without seeing the shooter straight away especially, in ET and previously in BF2. Would a larger screen such as 20" improve this considerably?

I would have thought it would make it worse as your card will struggle more with a larger monitor.
That is only a guess though.
What's your system specs ?

If the 20" monitor is still 1280x1024, then I doubt you'd see much difference, or any, but if it was a higher res like 1600x1200 then you'd be seeing things a little better.

What's your system specs ?

AMD 3500+ Venice core
6800GT
2GB pc3200 Geil value dual channel
DFI NF4 LanParty Ultra D

In that case i think your system would really struggle with a larger monitor and higher res & that's not a guess.

I run a 1600*1200 dell on basically the same specs at you with a 40+ fps on CS:S I don't know how that translates to your games of choice but i play with low settings mostly.

Bigger monitors are better for gaming even at the same resolution. Things are just easier to distinguish as they are bigger, and you might even be able to get away with an increase in FOV to boot.

^^ They are only better if your system can run it effectively.
The Source engine is well dated and not a good comparison to modern games such as BF2 and even that is a year old now.

If you want a bigger monitor and higher res i think you'll need a better card.
Clock that chip an all.

Well obviously, that goes without saying :) I'm assuming everything else remains constant - which is partly why I stated even at the same resolution.

If we are looking specifically at the OP's case, then I would say that I wouldn't want to increase resolution on a 6800GT for playing BF2. But on a more general level it's worth bearing in mind that e.g. 1680x1050 0xAA won't be much slower than 1280x1024 4xAA (if at all).

I don't play BF2 anymore TBH just recently got back into playing ET to fill the gap while I await the release of ETQW for instance. Bearing in mind that BF2 and ETQW are not that to dissimilar I should be looking to upgrade my 6800GT once I upgrade my monitor?

i had to ugrade from a 6800Gt after getting a 20" screen that done 1680x1050 as it struggled with BF2 I like to play at native res otherwise the quality suffers to much imo.
