I can't help with the Asus, but I can help with the Dell :) Here's my 5 day old Studio 1737

I went for quite a decent spec'd machine, 2GHz C2D, 4gb RAM, 250gb HDD, ATi GPU.

I absolutely love it. It's very quick (a nice step up from my old Athlon 64 3000+ laptop) and feels solid. The keyboard is nice, touchpad takes a bit to get used too seeing as how it's offset to the left slightly.

Slot feed DVD drive is a nice touch too. The battery life is very impressive for the spec of the machine. I went for the standard 6 cell battery and from a full charge can get somewhere in the region of 3 hours from general use. Obviously, I expect that to drop when using the machine for tougher tasks. The screen is nice too, producing a bright crisp image.

I was originally looking at a £400 Advent machine. Similar CPU/RAM spec but with a Blu-Ray player. I'm glad I spent the extra and went with the Dell.
