hello just wondering on everyones thought about the 17" macbook pro,

i had a black macbook and while an amazing machine in almost every way i had to part with it.
why?
well it was the screen on the macbooks. after you have used one for a few months you really start to notice how washed out if looked. Funny thing is in boot camp it looked better in windows
(tried colour profile adjustments, = no joy plus friends macbooks are the same)

so now i am missing the OSX goodness, in fact i am thinking of doing a complete switch over ( going to keep a headless p4 "server" running XP for me home network, accessed using remote desktop ) and getting a 17" MBP

does anyone here have the 17" macbook pro? what you guys thinking about its goodness?
i cant help thinking there might be an upgrade right around the corner at Mac World 08 in Jan.
Do you think it would be worth waiting until Jan to see if there is an upgrade at macworld.
I suppose i could hold off on purchasing it until Jan but i would really need it sharp in the new year..

any thoughts?

yeah i really think i am going to go for the 17" i totally get the value for money angle tho, as in really its not the best.

Very interesting point regarding getting the standard non HD screen, tbh i was thinking of paying the extra for that screen, do you really think everything is too small?

so there is one for HD screen and one against.... hmmm i think i really need to see them both side by side to see the difference for myself... shame the nearist apple store is 100 miles away....

I have a 17" MBP, 4GB of RAM, 2.4GHz and the HD screen.

If you have the cash the HD is really very nice, otherwise go for a 15" with the LED screen.

There probably will be an update, but if there isn't you'll be thinking "oh no, if I buy now they'll update in June arrrgh" and so the cycle continues ;)

so what are you thought about the screen res on the HD screen EVH?
i am def going for a 17" its just down to HD or not HD screen

correct me if i am wrong but if you have the HD version of the screen you cant set it to a good lower res.
you seem to be kind of stuck with one really high res screen, if you lower it you get rubbish looking text etc

Given a choice, HD res or normal.. I'd go HD everytime*

First time I saw it I was impressed, and I haven't looked back.

*and this was coming from a "normal" 17" MBP*

cool, BUT can you get a good lower res? can you get the same res as the non HD macbook pro?

Yes.

hey magic boy - thanks for that.. that was my main concern with the HD screen that its far to high for my liking.
I ve got a HD TV for proper HD fun :) so i can could just link it up via the DVI output when needed.
Still i think i am going to have to take a trip to Glasgow and check them both out side by side :)
its a shame i cant find pics online of both the 17's next to each other, one with the HD and one without, both running native :/ - maybe i just cant google though :o

cheers EVH too, very helpful, you dont per chance have a screen shot of the desktop on the HD res do you?

I do...

Check out the Mac desktop screenshot thread (its the one with the stars)

If I was being honest I'd say the HD RES is not overly different from the usual native RES, not that much [\I] of a change where it's too small.. If you understand.

i really think i am going to need to see this thing in person before i decide what i am going to do  i am so baffled.

Durzel - yeah i know what you mean. but i think 17" is going to be a beast. its going to be spending most of the time on my desk anyhoo

as for the LED backlight, i know where you are comming from, i am hoping if the dont do a complete redesign for the next update they will at least extdend the LED lighting to the 17"er
saying that though, i am sure the 17" inch screens more than kick ass jsut the was they are :D

hey EVH, noticed on that screen shot it has a 32bit alpha transparency shadow... did you go to the trouble of creating that from a screenshot or is that just a mac thing when you screendump? if it is a mac thing that takes the P***!!! :D

Apple + Shift + 4

...then press spacebar and you can choose a window, icon or menu to snap (in the sticky somewhere)

If you need any more handy mac tips i'm here all night ;)

i keep forgetting all the shortcuts!! i have the x-cuts widget which has ALL the mac os commands... there are just so many new ones to remember ( been using osx about a year )
one thing that really annoys me is i find that sometimes... especially with adium is my contacts window just disapiers completely and i cant find it again.
i have to quit the program and reopen to find it. Happens in other programs too.
is there a way to bring back a hidden window? ( i am not even sure its hid )

:)

Thought I'd hijack the thread somewhat..

I just sold my 17" MacBook Pro, going to put it towards a new 24" iMac and plough the left over cash towards Christmas :)

Actually made a tidy sale, sold for £1850 with postage but had it with HE in the first place, so almost completely broke even, perhaps a tiny profit (I'll have to check my original invoice).

why did you sell it bro?

yeah i will be getting the ED discount too :D Woo for education

Dunno, I love my portability but I found I was always using it plugged in around the house and I need more space for my music collection.

The iMac seems the perfect way to get back in to my music and also have room for Windows (so I can go back to playing Counterstrike Source) :)

i see, i totally get that. i mean when i had the macbook, but i just keep and old windows PC full of hard drives and share it over the network :)
really want to get Mac Tower for as my server though :D
