1700 to 5600x?

R7 1700 non x to a 5600x.
System mostly used for video encoding in handbrake. Am i likely to see a performance loss due to going from 8 cores down to 6?

Guessing single thread speed would be a fair bit faster. Reviews show it beating the 1700 in everything. Even if 1700 had 10 cores it would probably still get bested.

Agreed 200 is too much but if i can get it for 170 or less is it worth it? Would be selling the 1700 on to get some outlay back.

Finding it very hard to get over the psychological barrier that is dropping from 8 cores to 6 lol

Well i got the 5600x today. So far so good.
Iv noticed in prime it boosts all cores to 4650mhz then hits the power wall at 75w and throttles the cores to 3.8ghz. temps are 63c so still have thermal headroom.

Iv found the PPT setting in the bios and raised it to 100w but makes no difference. From the looks of it in hwinfo i need to find a way to raise TDC and EDC too but cant find those options. Anyone know?

Its a msi x470 gaming plus max mobo

Found it. It was in pbo settings. Set it to mobo controlled now i just alter the ppt and it auto raises the all core boost clock. Set to 90w and it leaked at 73c in prime. Boosts higher now on all core and single core boosts to stock 4.65ghz. didnt raise single core boost otherwise it will put silly high voltage in just to do 100mhz more lol.

I wonder if i can use a voltage offset to lower the voltages it uses to run cooler? Cant go crazy other wise it will become unstable i guess.

Dont get why the 5600x runs so much hotter than the 1700 cpu which was Overclocked pulling 110w ppt but running high 60s in temps on load.
Same cooler on the 5600x set to 95w hits 80c. Very odd

It shouldn't get that hot.

Might be worth remounting the cooler and see how even the paste was on the first install.

I checked that and the mounting and contact is good. From what im reading around now it seems to be normal due to there being one ccx on the 5600x so heat is concentrated in one spot where on the 1700 its more spread out and central too. The freezer 34 I have has a small base plate that doesnt even cover the entire heat spreader lol.
From reading up its easier to get the heat off the chip if its a dual ccx model like 5900x.

Even running prime on one thread will see the one core itself hitting 75c.

Performance is shocking. Didn't expect it to be this much quicker than the 1700 since iv lost 2 cores.
System response is greatly improved even web browsing is more snappy.
Video encoding is faster too than the 1700 which ran locked at 3.6ghz.
5600x in prime all core boosts to 4200 and holds there with 95w ppt. Cinebench is mostly 4450mhz on all core. Winrar benchmark saw all cores hold at 4650mhz and package power was around 63w.
I do rar compression a lot and thats where i saw a huge speed increase. Cant believe the difference since the 1700 was a good speed bump over the x3470 i ran which is effectively a first Gen core i7 870.

Still cant run my ram beyond 2733mhz unless i drop to 2 sticks so probably a mobo limitation.

Should tide me well till a 5900x or 5950x is available at lower cost. Or 3d vcache chip...

Does the die sit central under the head spreader for the 5600x?

i see the problem. my cooler only has 2 heatpipes in contact with the die. thats why i cant get the heat off it quick enough.

dual ccx cpu probably wont run twice as hot since more heatpipes do the work.

Also noticed all the cores on the 5600x under prime dont run at similar temperatures. 2 cores hitting 82c, 2 cores in mid 70s and 2 cores upper 60s. Very odd.
If run at stock 65w then it is under 70c on the hottest core. But meh who wants to run stock lol.

Maybe a better cooler that has a large baseplate would work better than the freezer 34...
