As title really, worth doing? I've always wanted one and they are coming down in price a lot now, but are the extra costs worth it? Supposedly the 172 isn't far off the pace of a standard model, although I'm sceptical.

Problem is the 172 is pretty cheap to run, servicing isn't too horrendous and economy is good, especially as I do a 50+ mile roudn trip everyday for work :/

Tempted to go look at this one tomorrow.

I know they are common as muck, but as said, the kid inside me has always wanted one :)

I have the same urge mate, but to be honest its hard to fault the 172 for the use you want to put it to, 50m a day will cost more in petrol on the Scoob and dont say you won't push it every chance you get :)

dont be.

a 172 will push the low spec scoob in a straight line and probally quicker round a track, as stock you will be able to turn in waaaaaaay better than that scoob.
Without sound to 'chav' I have raced a lot of both cars and frankly the lowest power scoobs are normally left wanting..while im pleasantly suprised by the clio sports i come across.

need to ask you self will you be modding at all?

or does speed matter THAT much?

Sounds to me that you just want to own a scoob for a bit and get it off your to do list, childhood dreams and all that :) if thats the case go for it bud.

remember though that its a buyers market, more so with Evo/scoobs etc at the moment it seems.

Ta for all that :)

It'll be standard for a little while I guess (buying a house this year and all). I have no interest in tuning the Clio as tbh it's not worth it, an Impreza is a totally diff matter tho :P

Speed doesn't matter that much, my drive is from Paignton, down the ring road, up to Exeter services way, and that's it, so it's mostly "motorway" type driving.

Maybe I should wait and get an STi or something once the house stuff has happened :) Still going to look at it tomorrow though lol.

Just did an ins quote, going to cost me a whopping £600 fc protected ncb to insure :)

Do I need to tell you what I'd do? :D

Get a drive, go and look at a few. The UK Turbos won't be much different than the 172 in performance, but there's just something about them that makes some of us love them.

Sounds like your one of us ;)

Couldn't see the silver one today but did stop off somewhere to look at a mica blue V plate MY2000 and it was lovely :) Really didn't help persuade me to keep the Clio, it was a bit more but was immaculate, and had aircon to boot.

I'm off work next week for a bit so might go have a drive :)

I'm after a scoob as my next car, when I get all my lovely no claims back for renewal time in november i think it is. Fantastic cars just too pricy for me at the moment.

Been offered a Type RA (from a mate of a mate) for £3000, apparently the acceleration is more comparable to a bike than a car. Full roll cage, tein suspension, uprated clutch and diff plates and some other bits. Engine is standard.

Hope it doesn't sell for 8 months..

One day!...

Yeah I could go for an older import nutter car, but bit too extreme for me atm, a uk turbo will give me decent runnign costs and reliabilty with a bit of room for modding.

The RA gear ratios are just nuts :)

I think with the mileage you do, plus the fact you are buying a house this year, you would be better off sticking the with 172. I can imagine big bills for the scoob if it goes wrong. Or you could possibly sell it for something similar if you didnt want to rack up too many miles on it?

4 wheel drive and lots of tuning potential? no contest tbh 172 will be miles behind a scoob on a track and on the 1/4 mile tbh.

Erm, no it won't.

the 4wd really hampers the impreza as speeds pick up, more than enough to counter the better initial grip.

The standard UK turbo from around 2000 isn't that quick apart from 0-60 where the 4wd gives it an edge.

I'd agree entirely with Cryfreeman.

If you really want to do it, then do it, but don't expect major gains, and only you can decide whether or not it's worth the extra cash. Personally, if I was saving for a house, I wouldn't do it (and in fact didn't. That's why I didn't end up changing my car in the last 18 months when I considered it)

Disagree

A 172 may well be a decent match for a newage uk wrx when rolling but a late classic would show a clean pair of heels to one any day of the week. Add in a couple of relatively inexpensive mods like exhaust and ecu and the 172 would have absolutely no chance.

Ok, that still doesn't make the scoob the right car for you but it is a fact. IMHO a 50+ mile daily round trip makes the scoob too expensive to fuel but thats just my opinion based on my finances. If you are comfortable with 25mpg ish and can afford the fuel & insurance then I'd say go for it.

I know scoobs are common and they aren't as all conquering as they once were but there is still a strong argument that they are one of the best cars for our (frequently slick) Uk B roads. Compared to any high power FWD car they are just so 'driveable' even when given some serious stick in poor conditions. Don't get me wrong - I know 172s are well rated, but in terms of point to point ability in mixed weather conditions and on varying surfaces scoobs are still very very competent and confidence inspiring cars. I think any true petrol head should own one at some point in their life.

My 2p :)

Although when new, RAs were cheaper than normal WRXs. Once they get over here they end up being more than WRXs??? 3K for an RA with cage and suspension mods is either being a really good mate or its had a hard life tbh.

To the OP, the scoob in the pic looks very nice but do try as many as you can before buying. I bought the first one I saw and I guess I was lucky - plus it had to be the right colour which limited my choices.

Although a 172 is probably a nice little hot hatch it won't bother a UK turbo with the most mild of modifications. Personally think Cryfreeman is being a little harsh to the humble UK turbo :)

However, 50 miles a day is going to cost you a lot of money in fuel bills - maybe as much as £20 a day.

Got room for a cheap oil burner and the scoob?

Even though I'm buying a house the cash for that has already been saved, it's just not available until Sept when my shares come through :)

But I probably will wait 'till that's sorted then do something.

i would definitely wait a little longer and save for an STI

the difference is quite marked. and the STI can be tuned to 300bhp with just a a grand or two

I would beware of posting links on a public forum showing your postcode and announcing you are gonna by a scooby...

But hey, thats just me
