Hotels in New York

Anyone got any personal recommendations for cheapish hotels in New York?

Don't want to spend a fortune but don't want to go too cheap and end up in a dump either.

Hotel Pennsylvania near from Madison Square Garden. Good location and was reasonable priced when we went.

I stayed in the Helmsley Middletowne once, it was cheap but the room was nice and big a pretty clean too. It was on a pretty quiet street off Lexington near the UN.

i am off next weekend and am going to stay here:

its about £120 a night, so not too expensive.

i can let you know what its like when i get back. not stayed there before but i has some good reviews. is not up there with the best ones (Ganservort, 60 Thompson etc etc) but its meant to be ok

The gf and I stayed in the Waldorf Astoria in September 2003 and it was only about 150 quid a night for both of us

We went with Trailfinders who tend to do really good deals!

I'd personally recommend The New Yorker, which is extremely close to The Empire State, Macy's and Madison Square Gardens, also there's a Mcdonald's directly in front of the lobby. :]

Just returned from a trip to NYC. Stayed in the Sofitel. Excellent location (Midtown) for what I wanted to do.

Vanderbilt YMCA is very cheap. Although it can be a bit hit and miss, if you just want a bed thats the place to go and is situated near grand central.
