Was looking at building a Mini ITX server for use at home, but then realised for the sort of money I will spend I could get a 22” Samsung widescreen monitor.

I currently game on a Samsung 940BF 19” model, is the jump up worthwhile? As most of my games (FPS, RTS) don’t seen to natively support widescreen resolutions. My current GPU is a 8800GT from Gainward but would probably look at upping the card to a 4870 or 9800 GTX+ to cope with monitor change.

I would say so, yes. However, personally, I would go the extra mile and get a 24", was in OCUK the other week, and they had some monitors on display in the shop, and made my mind up then, 24" all the way! Plus they're better for watching movies on, with their 1900 x 1200 displays. I'm currently running a HP 1100 21" CRT which looks like its going to go on for ever, but am keeping my eye out for a good 24 incher.

Tempted by their Digimate 24", good price for a VA panel, just a little worried about stuck or dead pixels...

Totally worth the extra IMO. Most newer games can handle the widescreen with no problems, and many can be hacked or settings changed quite easily. (Google widecreen gaming). And remember, if they don't, you can always turn scaling off to leave you with what you had before.

I got a Samsung 226BW and it's excellent, and for the prices of the newer ones, I don't think you could go wrong.

8800GT is fine for 1680x1050, I've been using mine since November (Got rid of my 8800GTX) and it's great, still runs games with ease.

I'm moving to 1920x1200 tomorrow and have no plans to change to another card still.
