HI all,

I just waned to clear something up that I have been told by a friend,

I was recently thinking about increasing the size of my monitor and was told by my friend that the best size monitor for gaming is 19" and that any thing above it ruins the quality - is this true?

What are the best monitors on the market at the moment?

All views & comments welcome!

Thanks.

Actually 19" is one of the lesser quality screens. Most 19" screens retain the 1280/1024 resolution found on 17" screens meaning that each pixel is just larger than a 17" with no extra detail. 20" screens have more pixels often and the size of the pixels goes down again from 19".

we're assuming you are talking about TFT monitors here, yes?

I think what your friend is aluding to is that 19" TFT's tend to be the most well established and devloped when it comes to gaming performance. This much is true really. The 19" screens offer no resolution increase compared with the 17" market, but the extra screen size is really nice for gaming and adds to immersion and the whole experience. Over the last year or so there has been a massive push in the 19" sector and this really has become the most popular size for gaming.

The 19" market is dominated now by fast, heavily overdriven TN Film panels. These offer arguably the most responsive panels in the market and there are plenty of excellent screens to choose from. In this regards, your friend is right, the 19" sector really does offer the best choice for gaming TFT's.

The 20" market has started to grow over the last few months though, particularly with WS aspect ratio screens. There are some emerging models which are very good for gaming, and some, like the afformentioned NEC LCD20WGX2 have even been labeled as being as fast as the fastest TN Film panels in the 19" market. The 20"WS sector does offer some good choices, but overall, there is more choice and more established "gamers" screens in the 19" market. As for which screen is the best for gaming, this article was written very recently and should help compare them all :)

Cheers Baddass, :)

thats the sort of reply i was looking for, I am currently thinking about upgrading my 17" monitor and doing away with my T.V all together so i wanted to purchase the biggest but still making sure that i have great quality of gaming.

what would you recommend?

well there are a lot of excellent 19" models which are well sutied to gaming for most people. They are all covered in that article i linked ot before. As it says in there, purely for gaming, the Viewsonic VX922 or the Hyundai Q90U are arguably the most responsive. If you need something a bit more all round, with wider viewing angles and smoother movie playback then the Viewsonic VP930 is one of the best in the market.

If you wanted to look at something bigger then have a look at this (another article to the rescue :p) which covers the new 20"WS market growth. The NEC LCD20WGX2 is a very good choice, and there's plenty of information about it here including a massive in depth review here by igors from OcUK :) The NEC is rated very highly and is a very responsive panel. If you wanted a gaming 20"WS monitor, then this would probably be your best bet right now

I'm very tempted by the NEC LCD20WGX2 i dont really want any thing smaller, i have been using my Hercules Prophet 920 View 17" for far to long and would love to purchase a good TV card and larger monitor. :)

See how the bank is at the end of the month (pay day).

again thanks for time and info Baddass. :)

I'm looking forward to play oblivion all weekend on my new monitor :)

Shame cause i dint think i would have bought it if it wasn't for you, so when my bills are payed at the end of the month and my card rejects them its also your fault he-he :D

Have fun with your new TFT mate. Nice purchase. Hope it turns out ok. I was in the same boat myself but i opted for the Viewsonic VX724 17" TFT because of space on my desk etc. What a fabulous TFT! Superb Picture. Games look awesome on it and it actually 'looks' bigger than a 17"!!! Well pleased with it.
