I have absolutely no experience with LCD's apart from the 15" at work and a 32" Samsung HDTV I use with a 360. I am still using what was 4 years ago Iiyama's entry level 19" CRT which is not even flat screen or anything. Most of my current games I am using 1600x1200.

I would like to replace the CRT with a LCD but I am not sure whether to go for a 19" or a 20" due to the higher native resolution of the 20" which I am sure my current setup will not handle in the next year or so, as I do not plan on upgrading my hardware. The newer games are going to be far more demanding and order to run them at playable framerates I would have to drop the detail, texture, lighting, anistrophic settings in-game in order run at 1680x1050. Rather than reduce the graphics settings I would rather drop the resolution, but from what I have heard (not seen for myself) does not look good on a LCD.

Could someone please explain to what non native resolutions look like on LCD? Does it make a big difference because when I had a gamecube connected to MY HDTV it looked fine. Or would I be better off just going for the lower resolution 19" which should match my hardware better for the upcoming year. In a years time if I do upgrade my PC I can always replace my second PC's CRT with the 19" LCD and get myself a 20 or 22" as they will be cheaper by then.
