will be running games at 1920x1080.
i would like to be able to use very highest setting available in the games.would that call for either a 780TI /920x
or would a lesser card be capable of 60 fps.
I7 and 8gig ram are my rig specs.

thank you very much for any advice.

For all games, playable fps but not necessarily 60fps the whole time, then a GTX780 / R290 should more than suffice.

+1 to the MSI links above.

If you ignore the badly coded tripe then a 7970/280x or 680/770 GTX will do the job very well at 1080p.

780Ti for 60fps in everything but ARMA 3 :D seriously love the 780Ti. But it is £150 more than a 780 and the custom cooled 290 cards are pretty good too (my friend is loving his). Also if 60fps is important, remember in 6-12 months newer games will be out needing more power again so if you want to keep the card a year before you upgrade I would go as high as you can. Or get one 780 / 290 non reference card now, and a second for SLI / Crossfire in a few months once the prices drop a bit :)

thank you very much guys.a friend has decided he wants a pre water cooled 780TI and has offered to sell me his old EVGA OC 780TI at a good price so I'm going to go for that,
thanks again for your excellent advice.

Lucky beggar! :p bit of a no-brainer that. Just check how much one costs here before you pay... Just in case he isn't THAT good a friend ;)
