Is a 3870X2 good for this resolution, or would i need a 4870 or 4870X2. I will be soon purchasing a 24 inch monitor and want to get a card at the same time if required.

Games I play:

Grid
Farcry2
Call to Duty 4
Brothers in Arms

I regularly play Farcry, Biosphere, COD4 and a bit of Farcry2 on my single 3870 at 1920x1200 on my Samsung 245B. All looks nice and plays well although I don't bother with any AA settings at the moment. Very quiet card too. I imagine anything above this would just get better. Roll on a 'silent' 4870!

The only game that needs real power at 1920x1200 is Crysis to be honest, the newer cards aren't really necessary.

(I play at 1920x1200 so I'm a real hypocrite I suppose, what can I say, I like Crysis :p)

im running all with 2 or 4 AA max all for 3 of those games not brothers in arms

and never get below 30 fps

even farcry 2 :O

x2 is for 8 AA and crysis + next res up

1920 x 1200 should be fine

my mate just lent me his 24" screen, my 8800gt

Company of Heroes and TF2 both play at a very playable fps, no noticable gap between this and 1280x1024, very impressed with the 8800gt tbh :)

Seriously the 8800gt is a mighty card, it never fails to impress me, especially considering how cheap they go for s/h these days, when I was using one on my 24" panel it ran everything @ ease apart from Crysis.

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but is the 4870x2 total overkill for 1680x1050?
Would 4850cf be better? or even a GTX series card?

Depends of the game, to be honest I have no idea how the 3870X2 is performing in current games but I very much doubt it can cope in the likes of Far Cry 2 and Crysis, COD4 and Grid will run fine, Brothers in Arms should be playable, just about. :)

but my card plays grid and COD4 v smoothly at top settings

So does my two year old 8800GTX, there really not that demanding.

Well they wouldn't be overkill as they would last ages at that res, but even a single 4850/4870 would cut that res with ease, so best option id say would be single 4850/4870 for now, then when they start to struggle, bang in another for Xfire, and probably by that time the 2nd card will be cheaper. :)

yup

i see no reason at all to upgrade, will try out Grid to see how it handles that

Coolios, Sounds like a plan :D

Exactly my plan too!
