OK, here's the next trivial problem.

I've installed the latest drivers for my ATI card but I can't get the thing to run at this resolution at fullscreen. Ubuntu says it's in that resolution but the screen is not filled. There's about two inches of black running all the way round. Any idea how to fix this? I'm running DVI-HDMI.

I've had this issue. You're experiencing a known scaling issue with the drivers. You need to use a Catalyst driver prior to 8.5 (8.4 or lower, if I remember rightly). It's all to do with an option in the Catalyst Control Centre forcing a scaling option.

I would be more precise, but I'm away from my machine at the moment. Google for ATI Linux HDMI underscan/underscaling.

I gave up trying to get ATI to work over a DVI connection at that resolution. Their linux drivers are still as poor as ever. Switch to a standard VGA connector and you'll be able to get the full resolution. Sucks to be sure, but there you go, that's ATI for you.

He's talking DVI > HDMI (converter) - HDMI. This is a very specific issue he is facing.

DVI at that resolution is fine with ATI drivers, they have improved greatly.

I just bought me 4870 card, are you saythat i'm gonna have to walk through fire to get my dvi-dvi monitor & plasma telly working together?

The Nvidia driver using nvidia-settings was a piece of cake.......

So dual screening then?

If you're just using DVI > DVI on your monitor you'll be fine. DVI to HDMI with a convertor to your plasma telly may bring about problems - I haven't checked the status of this bug but I would have thought the latest catalyst might fix the issue (as AMD knew about it)....
