Hi guys :)

I normally make my own decisions but at the moment I'm totally bored at work and practically browsing the web all day due to a lack of work. Hence, I keep looking at graphics cards too much and I don't think I can really be that objective at the moment lol.

So... i've just bought myself a Asrock 4CoreDual and e4300 to play with, and keep my 6800le (overclocked) agp and 1gb ddr memory for the moment. However, I keep looking at a brand new 1950pro 512MB for a mere £90, and i'm getting twitchy. I would ideally like the 8800 GTS 320 but I think my wife would murder me lol.

So here's the question. Do I >

1) Just play the waiting game and see what happens with the AMD 2600 when/If it comes out
2) Just buy the x1950pro 512 now as a stop gap until I can either afford a 8800GTS 640 or the next gen dx10 cards come out
3) Hang on for a 8800GTS/2900XT ?

Opinions please, as the 6800LE can't realistically play at 1280 res with games like Stalker/BF2/Oblivion :(

Thanks,
Matthew

Buy an 8800gts and say to your wife its a 1950??

I would wait for an 8800gts as games are only going to get harder to run, how long would you have to wait?

maybe hunt around for a 2nd hand 8800gts on the cheap ? have you tried the MM ?

Hes only got 33 posts :(

Im waiting for the 3 months myself :(

I haven't asked my wife yet :( Last time I bought race/track coil-overs, front mount intercooler, AVCR boost controller, anti-tramp rear locking collars and some other bits for my 200sx. She wasn't exactly impressed when I eventually told her about that, so I best keep everything above board :)

I would wait for max 6 months I guess. Why did she leave a bank card with 2.5k on it in front of me lol. Must ..not.. be ...bad

Yup I can't view the market yet unfortunately either. Is there any info on specs for the 2600 yet. Hmm.. what can I sell on ebay.....

Number and Pin?

Ill order it for you!! :p

lol thanks :p

perhaps I should have just bought an x1950pro agp instead of the e4300 and asrock board. This whole agp/pci-e thing is a pain in the royal ass. Now all we have is the PCI-E 2 specification to think about when that rolls out grr. I.T. Love it but hate it lol

But seriously.. I think I was a bit naughty buying the new chip and motherboard, but now i'm worried the 6800LE won't be improved by having a powerful new chip and i'll still want more :(

Leave it for now as my dads 6800pro will run Oblivion on medium/high at 1280, same with Stalker.

When cysis ect comes out, get a 8800gts, beg the wife :D

Oblivion looks nice and is playable at 1024, and i can play stalker at 1280, but only with medium stuff turned on. Compared to how it looks on very high settings (HDR etc), it looks pants :(

Just read the expected specs for the 2600 and was a little disappointed to see that it only has a 128 bit memory bus :(

Thought they might have gone with 256 again to give it a good advantage over the 8600.

I have the same mobo, just be careful coz I'm almost certain that a PCI-E card (ie. the 8800) wont run at full tilt on these boards!!! (something like x4 instead of x16 or something I seem to remember)

Where did you see the X1950Pro 512Mb for £90, I just bought the X1950Pro 256MB for £95? :(

There's a Gecube 512mb x1950pro on *another site* for £90.79 (£95.65 for a Sapphire).

edit - no pimpage of other stores was intended!

I did avoid mentioning the company :) You may want to alter your post. I would also prefer to get a GeCube than a Sapphire.

I do realise the 1950pro will run slower than an agp version (due to it being only 4x pci-e), but I plan on selling it later if I was to get one.

I might add that another card has just been added...

Sapphire ATI X1950XT 256MB GDDR3 for only £105 !!!!!

Ok, it isn't 512MB but you can't have it all at that price lol. Oh man.. my bank details are getting itchy now!! :(

Hmm.. I think I might have to do a few weekend jobs or something. I wish I had a cat to sell lol. EDIT: Well I do have some 200sx calipers worth about £80-100 but I've already promised them for free to somebody lol.

Basically for £15 extra your getting about 10fps more per game :) I think that's worth it. Glad I didn't order the £90 pro now... although it's still £105 which ain't exactly cheap if your talking about pure money. I'd have to work a day and half to afford it lol. (not much but it's already accounted for lol).

OK... i caved.

I have the x1950xt 256 on order :D Seems to beat the x1950pro by at least 10fps in each game (which is quite a lot considering in oblivion that was 23 versus 33fps), and all for only £15 more. Although the only downside is it's 256 and not 512, but I only have a 19" monitor with max 1280 anyway, so not exactly worried about the res.

I think that will sensibly tide me over until the next lot of dx10 cards come out (or the x2900xt somehow turns out be be a fab card). But then i'll probably be needing a new power supply and 4GB ddr2/3 memory lol.

Cool :D Trying to minimise costs so got to wait till friday with the free delivery :(

EDIT: Thankyou the advice guys :)

Something I noticed last night. Because it was quicker, I tried out my settings at 1280*1024 in single player on BF2 (at highish settings). The game was running at 60/75 fps most of the time. When I went into multiplayer with these settings, they dramatically dropped to 35-45fps. I think now that maybe it's more of a CPU issue (although there are more players on the screen on a 48 player server, even when looking at the sky when dead it was only about 43fps!).
