1950XTX Cooling - Any good?

Hi there, have built a PC for a mate and put the above GFX card in, and he is finding that the temps look a bit high with the stock cooler - sitting at about 63 degrees idle.

Was looking at a couple of alternatives and was wondering whether they would be any good and if anyone here uses them, as the reviews look promising.

The accerlo x2 is brill, I've got mine on my x1900 xt and O'cd to 700/850 and it never overheats. The stock cooler would only take it to around 650/780 before overheating.

Almost silent as well, wish I'd bough it sooner really.

Cheers for the reply, i am also thinking of getting one for my 1950pro, that currently sits at about 40 degress idle with the stock cooler on.

I have a 7800gt with an accelero and a 7950GX2 with two Zalman Fatal1ties.

Both coolers are excellent.

The Accelero is a very capable cooler just as Yorkshire says! It's super quiet, very effective and incredibly cheap. I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed... all in all it's probably your best bet.

The Zalman is also a top drawer cooler but you pay nearly double for the privilege! I got the fatal1ty edition as i wanted the best possible cooling performance for the biggest overclock and on top of that i'd never seen any cooling results for the GX2 with this cooler as no-one had done it before.

However, even with the GX2 maxed (Stock is 500/600 and my overclock is 603/833) the temps don't go over 46 degrees C with the fans on the zalmans at about 1/3 speed. So with that in mind i'd recommend that if you did want to go with a zalman design the standard VF-900 with a lower max rpm of 2400rpm (the fatal1ty's max is 3600rpm) will do you just fine!

My choice in your position would be the Accelero.

63 is perferctly normal for this card

is he worried about the temps for stability reasons, or that he's big into overclocking ?

if its the former he has nothing to worry about really. GPU's do reach very very high temps but cope with them no problems

I did have a look at the thermalright cooler, not sure how well it would work with the current setup as airflow isnt great with the current case. Is also quite a bit more than the Accelero.

If airflow was an issue then a 92mm fan would need to be fitted which would make it more expensive again. Will have a word with my mate and see what he thinks. All the results that you guys have given look very promising and a darn sight better than 63 idle.

He had a look on the net at temps, and it looks to be at the top end really.

He is also getting stability issues when playing games, such as Oblivion. As far as i am aware the game crashes an awful lot and the temps go up to 80+ degrees.

Has he reseated the heatsink onto the core. People do tend to do that to improve temps plus, as nothing looks to have been disturbed, in the event of an RMA the warranty remains intact!

Arctic Silver 5, Ceramique and Arctic Cooling MX5 seem to be the thermal paste's of choice for this!

The card 'as is' out the box with nothing being touched on it. Will pick up some AS5, as need some myself for my Ninja Scythe on my CPU as using the stock stuff.

Will let you know on the results when he gets back to me as to what he wants to do with it, may be goin watercooled in the near future so will have to have a look at some good components for NB, CPU and GFX.
