Hi i have a i7 920 running at 4ghz with 6gb of ram and a 4870x2
what sort of performance hit would i see going to 1980x1080 from 1680x1050
and how much would it improve how games look.

Massive hit. You'll prob need a couple of 5970's to get reasonable framerates. Crysis is out of the question.

What? That is complete BS.

You'll have better FOV and detail will be sharper, not sure if you'd notice it very much though. I do prefer it over 1680 myself.

4870x2 are great cards performance wise.

4870X2 will be fine - I run 2048x on my 260GTX SLI and it gives me consistantly well over 60fps with max detail in everything aslong as I stay below 16x AA... and personally I don't see a need for more than 4x in most games... the only exception really is crysis which averages about 55fps.

You have an awesome gaming machine, and even now a 4870x2 is more than up to the job at 1080p. Graphics will be noticably sharper and more detailed, and 4xAA will look super smooth. As for crysis, it's just a cack game that can't run maxed out on even the fastest SLI setup available still at a constant 60+ FPS, everything else will be totally smooth maxed out with 4xAA.

Agreed crysis is a cack game anyway:p

1920x1080 doesn't give you a higher FOV over 1680x1050, I think you would actually get less FOV as most games are Vert+/- between 16:9 and 16:10.

It's like an extra 15% worth of pixels to render over 1680x1050 so as a base line say that you'll lose 15% of your performance.

I also moved from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080p and the difference is quite noticeable, well it was to me anyway :)
