I don't know what I can say because its a legal issue and it's high profile garage, but it's not their fault (the mechanics) and they're all pretty broken hearted by what's going on.
is it even a storage issue as they either wait for parts to be reconditioned - are they far away from you such that you couldn't drop it by regularly for more work.

Do they give you a man hour break-down on parts of the repair (how long did sills & jacking points take , or wing , old stone chip removal - what are the big hitters )

It is. I mean most of is labour. The first place did say about 200 hours of welding and as it turned out that was pretty much on the money.

The only issue I'm in now is because the car is mostly in parts I'm not 100% sure where we're at.

I'm half thinking about shipping it over to The Smallest Cog though, let Hammond deal with it :D

I just get an invoice every now and again for labour and any big ticket items. Radiator is proving tricky for example.

It's not a storage issue, it's a legal issue regarding the owners of the garage. As I say I can't really say anything at this stage. It's a bit of a shame.

It is the labour that is the scary part. It is quite cheap if you have the ability and time to do it yourself. I needed to weld the rear arches on my old trusty Saab. Parts and paint cost me less than £200. It took me a good two full weekends to get it done. Removing all the interior at the rear, dismantling the rear end, cutting out all the bad, cutting and forming new panels, welding it all in, seam seal, paint and then put everything back together. Easily a good 40-50 hours.

yep which will then be an easy £3k job at the cheapest of garages

Restoring cars, unless you can do the labour yourself, is a costly process. Saw a car last month which had had £110k spent on it restoring it over 4 years. Its expected auction price was only £40k-£50k

I'll never get back what I spend on this. Even the best examples are £25k. Im not a million miles away from that before I've even started the big stuff. Needs a full exhaust system, radiators, complete respray, I'd like to do a manual swap.

I came into this with a 25k budget but I'll be surprised if I get where I want for less than 40. I could go further too, but I'd rather have a driving car that will last another 30 years than a concours car to sit in the garage.
