Can anyone comment on these cars? ive heard that they are one of the most reliable cars available.

The spec and japanese reliability are quite appealing to me as a first car.

Will cost me 950 to get insured tpft on one of these as my first motor.

Description of one ive seen is here...

Manual, 99,100 miles, Red. 98(R) FSH, 5 Mths tax, 11 Mths MOT, 5sp manual, EW frt and rr, ESR, Elec mirrors, Cruise Control, CL & Immobi, CD player with detachable front, Elec aerial, Dr and pass A/bag, Alloys. 2 owners. £995. ono

Im thinking it could be pretty nice, and its local so i might go have a look.

What do people think?

Good idea or not?

The 97 R model is a very old model now, ie its the rehashed version of the model that ran from 1993.It was very similar to rover 600, infact they share engines amongst other things.Dull car to drive, dull interior, and the 2.0 isnt very economical, but they are reliable.

Im talking about this shape: Here

If its the later then they are much better, actually honda really got their act together with the later shape.

They're great cars, ok not the most attractive but really good nevertheless. The best spec is the ES - FULLY loaded whilst most models come with a good range of toys - electric everything, heated wing mirrors, cruise etc. I had the 2.2VTEC and that was a hoot.

For a 1st car, you can do MUCH worse and probably not much better for the price of the Accord.

Comfort over looks for me i think.

What does that one i linked look like to people? seem a good example?

how many miles are these engines capable of

Think it's very nice - a good first car! Has aircon as well, not listed in the ad but it's there. Probably need re-gassing but that aint expensive. You really can't go far wrong, solid cars and VERY comfy - I drove my mate's 2litre that had 160k on the clock and it was fine and mattpc has the normal 2.2 with over 172k on the clock and that's still going strong!

It's not the best shape of Accord ever and everything wohoo says is correct but..

It's £995. For that money, it's a sound buy, IMHO.

Finally a first time buyer with a sensible choice of cars.

The odds will be in your favour just dont overlook any particular details that might cost money like iffy abs or a leaking ps pump.
Honda engines are solid, check the gearbox and clutch is fine

There was a new version in the 98 year apparently, the older model:

Be warned they are thirsty cars apart from that you can complain for 1k, cant think of much else for this kind of money tbh, maybe a mondeo or a primera, maybe even a high mile Avensis.

The later model accord, will more than likely cost you another grand, mind i picked up a Type V of Ebay for 2100, now that was a bargain, lovely cream leather interior.

That shape got a nose job in mid 96 which went upto mid 98.

Gonna phone about it tomorrow morning.

Will go up and see it, and if its any good ill offer 900 cash. Desperate for a car now and comfort will be nice :)

You can get the newer shape with less miles for a couple hundred more. You get loads for your money. Very reliable cars, the average repair is £200.

great cars. It won't be that thirsty.. However, it is a 2.0l and will use fuel like a 2.0 does.. No it's not the most amazing car in the world but it's a great car for less than 1k. Mileage is low considering. Have you checked for history etc etc? Funnily enough cars like this DO get clocked because they run so well on high mileage but lose value.. Might be worth an HPI check despite the price as if you decide to sell you don't want a clocked car.

COMMON HONDA ACCORD FAULTS

Hardly any really but the two usual complaints are...

Calipers stick and the car pulls to one side or doesn't brake properly

ABS sensors fail. This one is a bit worse because although it is easy to fix the parts are not always easy to get hold of. If a wheel sensor fails rather than the computer or other bit then when you start the car the abs light will light as normal and then go out. This indicates that the system has gone online. However, after about 5metres of movement from the car you will hear the relay click and the ABS light will pop back on. This is because one of the wheels has not told ABS how fast it is going. Therefore ABS shuts down and reports a fault. If the ABS light does not light up at all when you start the car then it probably means that the owner has pulled the bulb because there is a fault with the system.

Phoned up about it just now.

The lady sounded nice and she said her husband was on his way home from work and for me to call back soon, so at least i wouldnt be buying it from ******! :)

I think one plus about these cars is that its unlikely its been horsed about like other "first cars" that others in my situation consider.

Fuel is gonna sting a bit, but Ive not explained that fact to my mother lol
