Behind you... Naked!
Ok, I just got given an old iMac.

So far, it does bugger all, but it goes into some EASY GO educational software thingy???

I am tryign to work out whats up with it.

So far, it seems that its got 64MBRAM cos its left with 38MB and that seems like its very efficient if it is.

Cannot work outh the HD Size, but Im under the impression its kind of 10GB or maybe less?

I also cannot work out the OS as it seems that only this Educational software runs and nothing else... If I try to quit it, the iMac shuts down??? - But it looks like MacOS 8.x and thats ONLY going by the fact that it looks identical to a theme I got on my Atari, because nothign in the menu seems to show this up.

I had a peek yonks ago and I saw that some older MacOS'es can be obtained on the net, even via Apple... Can 8 or even 9 be had?

How can I find out the specs on this iMac?

How far will it U/G? - New HD, RAM etc...

Its also only got a CDROM and it does not seem to work fully, so I might need a new CDROM, or preferably a DVD or even a writer!... Will I need specific models or are all IMacs going to have the same DVDROM?

This is as close as I can find...

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac_350.html

http://www.macspeedzone.com/html/hubs/specs/imac/feb-01.shtml

Got to be one of them, but which one????

Is there anything like Everest for the Mac I can run to try?

How do I run software... This thing is just massively crippled to only run that educational stuff and I am unable to do anythign else at this time?

I need to get some MacOS CDs dont I?

Anyway, if anyonecan offer me anything, then thats will be great.

The use I have planned for it, is simply for basic EMails and internet... However it does look like its only going to do 800x600 and if thats the case, then I dont know?

36 reads and no replies?

Ok, I have ripped it to bits and this is what I found out...

1 - Its a 233 Mhz job
2 - Its got 32MB
3 - Its got a 4GB Quantum
4 - Its only capable of 800x600

OMFG thats poor.

Luckily I have an old LapTop thats got a 64MB Stick in, and thats worked ( The guy said it takes simple PC100 RAM - the lying sod ) but its got 100MB Now, so thats better.
It seems to take 128+256 MAX, and I have a 256MB about the place somewhere, but cant lay my hands at this time.

I have managed to "Borrow" MacOS 9.2 from a mate but it wont boot? - Looking on T'internet, I see that is possibly down to not good enough spec, and with 100MB & 4GB its possible that it coule be any of those.

I tried to get the HD out but failed... I got a handfull of bigger drives to use instead, but I am stuck with the 4GB which is annoying at best.

So, anyway... It definitely had MacOS 8 on it now, but that EASE / EASY thing... I just had it on 2 minutes ago... is still locking me out and I dont know the password so its not letting me run anything or even display any docs of any kind??? - but if I had OS8 I should get a fresh install going surely.

Im off!

It should take PC100 RAM, my B&W does. 800x600 shouldn't be too bad, maybe it will. Have you reset the PRAM?

What are the 9.2 CDs you've got? Are they retail or restore CDs for a particular product?

It takes LapTop RAM

Reset the PRAM? - I have read about this, but what? where?

9.2 CD - Just one. Its a Retail disk ( As far as I am aware? )

I give it the "C" Key but it just kind of hangs there... I have left it there for yonks and nothing happens?

I have nmot tried the ALT thingy yet... I will do that now, just in case that might help somewhat?

Firmware? - first day with a mac also means that Im not touching firmware just yet.

We had a couple in at work once.

They both came with 9.2 on them. One of them was a 233 with 128mb of ram and the other a 333mhz with 256mb of ram.

Both seemed pretty quick running Mac OS 9.2 although let down by the poor size of the hard drive.

OMFG thats poor.

 It's quite a old machine now, but at the time it was a pretty decent spec.

I was offered a G3 at my previous job.

They were shifting the servers to another area of the building and I found it boxed up in storage. As soon as I saw it I thought "F THAT!"

I wouldn't bother with OS 9, it's not the best experience, and will probably taint your Mac impressions. Go for a G4+ and use 10.3 onwards.

Thanks guys.

I have toyed with Mac Emulation in a few ways on my Ataris.

I have piddled about with Mac Plus then Mac Classic, ( Both Mono ) then Quadra, and this is *** first ever time I have got hold of a true Mac.

Its not that I actually went looking for it... I was offered it and so thought why not?

The guy who offered it to me, has a couple that are up for grabs, one is a 700Mhz job, with 40GBHD & 512MBRAM and thats running OSX and he is asking a ton for it... That is a price I would be happy to pay, but the thing is, that I dont actually need it do I?

I have 14 PCs ( 7 Setup at any one time - others added only when needed ) , as well as 3 Atari Setups permanently... Well... Setup!

I only took the Mac cos I thought it would be cool for the missus instead of the LapTop.

Might I add that this 233Mhz / 32MB Imac is many many times faster than the 800MHZ LapTop is, thats running WinME and has 196MB!!! Similar to how my Ataris are.

If this is the performance of a Mac compared to a PC then I am wondering how the hell PC are so popular??? ( Half a joke... Half! )

Anyway, I am haing serious issues at the moment in just getting the thing to start up...

I could not do it all day today, and most of last night, but my daughter woke me up this morning saying that she coule not stop it playing music... I had an Audio CD in there and it was playing it over and over, so perhaps there is a fiddly contact somewhere that I might have knocked out?

Also the RAM inside it...

I am not up on the RAM here, but there is 2 slots for RAM...

The thing is that they are different RAM.

Why ?

I have dug out some RAM for it... I have a pair of 64MBs but I can only use one at a time, and the other is a 128MB and I have put the 128MB into the bottom slot and the 64 in the top one, but I am only getting the 32MB+64MB and the 128MB stick seems to be ignored? - it is also from an old ATI Graphics card too, so it acting as COAST?

I dont bloody know.

I will have another play anyway... See if I can sort the power issues out, and if I can get a bigger HD in there ( got a couple of 20GBs one of those should be fine ) and of course if I can get it online too with that LAN Port and I might be happy with it, but if I can grab hold of as cheap better Mac then even better... We'll see.
