I checked my internet banking account today to make sure a cheque had cashed ok. It had, but apparently the day after I cashed it I also cashed two more cheques for £9500 each . This mysterious £19k has been sitting in my account now for 4 whole days and I don't know wtf it has come from or who put it there.

What could it be? Banking error maybe? I have no idea how this works but if I transfer it somewhere else before they realise they've made a mistake, will I be able to keep it?

go into the bank or ring up and ask where it has come from. likely to be an admin error and will be taken back regardless, so dont spend it.

Before the inevitable "withdraw and keep it" posts, you shoud contact the bank and ask them what to do next.

Good luck though. Maybe it's one of those errors that can't be reveresed :) I look forward to the "spec me a 15k car and a nice watercooled setup" threads :D

yeah of course you can.

its not like monopoly where you get to keep banking errors in your favour.

someone will notice and reclaim it, failing that I'd suggest telling the bank, certainly dont spend it or move it as they will rectifiy the issue and if the cash isnt there then it will take you (probably) overdrawn

19k is going to show up somewhere or another... I expect it will be traced back to where it went.

I suggest perhaps, pulling it out into a savings account, and getting some interest on it but dont spend it. Then if they ask for it back, you still have it!

(No idea what i am talking about, but seems to make sense to me :))

Yeah, I wouldn't spend it as most likely whenever they do a weekly audit trail or investigation (Most likely another customer has lost this money :P), the money will "equal" to where it has been lost.

So phone teh bank

A family member had this happen to him. He phoned up the bank and they put his account on hold due to money laundering. All his direct debits were cancelled and he couldnt access his account to withdraw money. He could only go to the bank and provide ID, but was limited to only £50.

And he still is without access after 5 days. He phoned the bank and said, "I have a habit, its called EATING". LOL.

Be very careful. :)

Transfer it somewhere else to gain some interest and when they contact you asking for it back, tell them you spent it on bread.

Any advantage to this or should I just tell them?

I like how you've ignored everyone else's advice telling you to do the right thing, and are asking for opinions on this suggestion instead :p

Tell the bank about it, don't be a fool by thinking they won't notice.

I would take it out ASAP and if they notice then just say
its MY part of the Treasury’s £100bn lifeline to you lot :D

Well it is your taxes they are using to get them selves out of the poo

I'd tell the bank, wouldn't seem right to me if large sums of money started appearing in my accout. SCAM! THEY ARE ALL OUT TO GET ME! *cpwers*

It's probably there by error or criminal activity, either way, don't withdraw it... Tell the bank and avoid being shafted.
