Hi All,

Im looking for a half decent upgrade from my 1GB 4890, what would be todays equivalent.?

I've a crossfire motherboard so could get another 2nd hand 4890 but wanted to go DX11 if possible..

TIA.

Something like a 6770 / 6790.

If you can afford it, a 7850 would be provide around double the performance, and these will be available soon.

Ideally about £150 ish, then my 4890 will go into making the missuses rig 2x4890 xfire which should keep her happy for a while longer.

Arent the 480's hot and power hungry.?
Im not against Nvidia god knows we've had enough of them over the passed :)

Was just thinking about future proofing by being able to put another card in for crossfire later down the line.
Want to keep this rig for at least another two years as my Q9650 still eats everything i throw at it.

Yes and yes, but they will easily manage any game and would produce as much heat and noise as 4890 CrossFire.

Next card I'd reccomend would be a GTX560, but that isn't as fast as the GTX480.

Maybe have a look at a 6950 or 7850? They're about £30 above your budget but are fast the 7850 uses less power and they have more vRAM.

The GTX 480 I have here isnt that noisy. I have a Zotac and using MSI burner tool I control the fan to run at 80% when the core hits 60C. I find this acceptable, dont get me wrong it is noisier than my case fans but its only at that volume while im gaming and i game with headphones!

For £150 your best deal would be 2gb 6950 second hand from MM. Brand new - you may find 560ti for that price, but 480gtx is probably more worthwile for only £30 extra imo.

I remember when I bought my 4890 I got it because it was one of the most powerful cards at its price point.

Sodd noise, sodd heat - buy some headphones and turn the fan up!

Get the 480 is my vote!!

480Vs 5770 (4890 equivalent were very close)

Nice boost there and for a great price, later on replace the cooler and clock the hell out of it. I can see the 480 lasting at 1080p until the 'next' BF3 comes along.
