Hey all,

Since installing vista I'm wondering whether I'm better off just using my corsair 3200 xms LL memory or having an extra 512mb of geil golden dragon in there?

Anyone got any ideas as to which is the best? I'm just wondering if I'll lose 1T if I use 4 sticks?

Cheers :)

Have you got 2x512mb and 2x256mb? :)

Yes mate sorry,

2x512 mb corsair twinx 3200
2x256 mb geil golden dragon 3200 stuff

The timings on the corsair are lower than the golden dragon also

Sorry need to know your mobo and CPU too (If its A64 knowing the core type would help too Winchester/Venice etc..)

Lol well look at me being sparse with the info, sorry again -

Abit KN8 Ultra motherboard with an opty 144 cpu (core type I think they all use the same? I can't remember which one but will get a program and check)

Cheers for your help and its a venus core? :)

Ok mate, thats good.

With your core (its based on the new E revision) you'll be able to run 400mhz 2T with 4 modules installed. If you're playing the latest games the extra 512mb will be more beneficial than the slight (2-3%) hit from running 2T. Battlefield 2 and Oblivion will definately like the extra RAM.

You'll also have a performance hit from the slacker timings, so tightening them up as best you can will help, what are the timings on both sets of modules?

At 400 - the corsair is

Cas 2
ras to cas 2
Ras precharge 2
Cycle Time (Tras) 5

And the Golden dragon has

CL 2-6-3-3 written on it?

Is changing to 2t not going to make that much difference? I'm up around 6000mb/s at the minute in sisoft sandra with this memory!! :)

You don't have to change to 2T, it will doing it automatically when you put the extra modules in. The difference is 2-3% in real world performance, it'll be much greater in Sisoft but thats very synthetic and isn't important. Slackening the timings to 2-3-3-6 (CL- tRP-tRCD-tRAS) will mean another slight performance hit. Overall the extra 512mb will still be better in BF2 and anything that uses more than 1Gb of RAM as paging to HDD kills performance.

You can check your memory usage by thrashing your system like you would normally do in a heavy session, exiting to windows, hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL and checking your peak commit charge (you don't need to have your programs running, the value is the max RAM usage your system has seen since being turned on).

flog the lot & get 2 x 1GB sticks. I've always found systems can be flakey with more than 2 sticks, especially when they are not all the same.

I agree with the flogging of them all and the getting of 2Gb.

Somethimes you can lose performance from having a setup like this rather than just sticking with the 2x512.
