I've got a choice here, I can either run 2x1gb Geil PC3200 DDR400 or I can run 1x1gb Geil PC4000 DDR400.

Which is my best option?

Go with the larger 2gb as that will make the bigger difference. Depending on your board you may even be able to run dual channel which will really speed things up!

The 3200 would be my choice! If you plan to overclock you may need to set a divider so you don't run it faster than spec... e.g: over 200mhz (DDR400)

The PC4000 can run at DDR500 (250mhz) which would be better for easy overclocking but 1) they tend to have looser timings and 2) you only have 1gb

My mobo does support dual channel mode, but when I plugged in all of the RAM it gave me a hardware error. Could this be due to the two different speeds?

I've got 4 slots - Blue Blue Black Black

Am I correct in thinking that running my RAM in dual channel mode woul be One in a blue and one in a black?

Right, so could I run 2x512mb PC4000 in blue and 2x1gb PC3200 in black?

Totalling 3gb?

Yes mate,

I've done the same.

Had 1gb of Geil one PC4800 or 300mhz ram.

Upgraded to 2Gb of Geil value ram PC3200 or 200mhz.

Runing all 4 sticks in my Asrock 939 dual sata2, lowered my ram timings a bit.

3GB for Battlefield 2 sorts that lag out !

i got 4 sticks of ram in asrock board and it runs at 2t command rate. problem is that 2t command rate does seem to hurt the performance quite badly.

Dont know about losing dual channel, but you will have to run 2T which (depending on application) can hinder performance by as much as 20%

Some mobos will have a hissy fit and run all sticks at 333.

Id just have 2gb of the 3200. Low latencies will give you better performance that high bandwith, and i doubt you will actually use over 2gb anyway
