I bought a 1gb RAM chip off a well known auction site but it only shows up as 512mb ...

it has 512mb written on every chip on both sides but seller insists its 1 gb

can anyone shed any light ? how can I tell for sure ?

Thanks

Turn off pc, and install only 1 stick.

Either use control panel> system properties>general tab

or download CPU-z, and check under memory tab.

Alternatively if your bios is set to display the post screen (and not some graphics instead), then it will tell you there too. I wouldnt go by what it says on the chips, it could be double sided ram.

That is the best way of telling - if your Bios says 512MB then that is all the PC will be able to use for whatever reason....
