1Gbps PPPoE connection - router recommendations

Hey everyone,

I recently got a new 1Gbps PPPoE based internet connection through Aquiss, but my ASUS AC86U seems to cap out at around 500Mbps down. I've checked cables, settings, and ISP configuration, everything looks fine, but I’m still not hitting full speeds.

Is this a known limitation of the AC86U when handling PPPoE connections? I can see the CPU hitting 100% at times, and have seen comments on this elsewhere.

If so, what combined (with Wifi etc) routers would you recommend that can fully utilise a 1Gbps PPPoE connection without breaking the bank? If possible I would like some head room for increase in speed but not essential.

Would love to hear your experiences.

Many Thanks

I have ac86u and can get the full 940mbps from my cityfibre connection but don't know if that is PPPoE.

Regardless, Flint 2 is a good option. I think the Flint 3 might be soon but it looks more evolution not revolution.

Flint 2 can be directly imported from China for significantly less

I have Aquiss and use an Eero pro 6 mesh, not sure what your budget is as Eero isn't the cheapest of options and is limited for ports, but I use a network switch to get round that.

You might also want to contact Aquiss support as they will be able to recommend you some routers and may tell you if the ac86u should be getting full 1gbps speeds.

UniFi Dream Router 7, not cheap but worth it alone for the slick mobile app and cloud management. Also gives plenty of scope for adding additional UniFi hardware in the future.

You need hardware offloading enabled to get >500Mbps on the AC86U. Some features like QoS are not compatible with hardware offloading and will prevent it working so you'll want to make sure it's disabled.

PPPoE is single threaded, and that either means hardware acceleration or enough CPU grunt to make that work. Apparently the UDM-SE (and presumably anything else with the same architecture in the range) is now capable of greater than gigabit with PPPoE, but honestly, Flint 2 or self build would be my first thoughts, WRT or OPN on modest hardware shouldn't be that different to a F2.

Hello All

Thank you for your help and all your suggestions, after reviewing again yesterday, I had QoS switched on for another device, once that disabled that, I started to get max speed. CPU now doesn't even make it to 5%.

All fixed.

Thanks again @John24

:D
