How's this for a 1k gaming build? This is everything I need. If I were cannibalising an old system, I wouldn't need drives or the case etc., but I'm starting from scratch.

Some of this stuff is out of stock - but I'm not planning to buy just yet.

A £25 soundcard is unlikely to be better than onboard, but this is a guess on my part rather than knowledge.

If you're a student you may be able to get windows 7 cheaper than that.

MX2 or MX3 are the favorite pastes these days, both outperforming AS5.

The case is full of holes and generally quite flimsy. It was a bargain when released at £30 or so, but probably not the way to go now.

I have a suspicion that 2000mhz ram is overspecified, but I don't know for certain.

why only have 4gb of ram on 1k build??
also you can go i7 and x58, that will futureproof your machine as well

Can anything feasibly use more than 4GB right now? The upgrade option is always there.

If you can spec me i7 with all the stuff I need as above for under £1k I'll be VERY impressed! :)

But its not £1000.
The case is still crap.
HDD is worse, not just lower capacity.
Slower dual channel RAM on an X58 is somewhat of a waste.
Id want at least 600W for those components.
Not a fan of the H50 either, but thats personal preference.

That's OK. But I'd call that a "budget" i7 build. Low-end RAM and Mobo. Also there's no soundcard, and is £80 more.

Curiously, though, SATA optical drive? While mine is IDE? Is there a big difference?

depends if you want a hideously chunky ribbon cable in your machine, or a tiny sata cable :)

p.s why buy a directx 11 card now, when there is no games for them yet, wait till they decrease in price

People said that when they came out, and now they're more expensive! ;) I'll probably be saving until Fermi's release anyway.

Your build is odd. Two slower HDDs for more than the one F3? Also the Mobo, RAM and CPU cooler are fairly low-end. I'd rather have high-quality P75 components than scrimp to get an i7 build under £1k. The mobo especially.

they were for raid, i have them in raid, and they come out faster than a velociraptor..... whats the need for a top end mobo, you overclocking???
that will still overclock well
the ram is great, never seen anybody with problems, speeds arent too great but heyyyy

come on i am trying here ;)

I know :) I didn't think even for a second that I could get a complete i7 rig for under £1k, considering I need everything. So you've got me thinking!

I will be aiming for 3.8Ghz, yes. I'll have a play around with X58 tomorrow and see if I can't optimise it on your base at all.

You should get close on air with that easy, just think about the money you will be saving on future proofing if you just let a lil bit of performance go now, tbh unless you dont do lots of rendering etc i personally dont think you will see the difference in less ram speeds
