Hi all.

I am looking to possibly build a new rig again after i discovered some damaged bent pins.

I will try and fix them tonight but doubt i will get very far so as a backup plan i want to build a new rig with a 1k budget.

Here are the specs of my existing system:

  • 2x 980 GTX SLI cards
  • 12GB 1600mhz DDR3 Ram (4x3)
  • Corsair AX850 Gold PSU
  • Lian Li A7010 case(falling apart)
  • 2 crucial SSD's(128 and a 256gb one)
  • 2 Nocta 120mm Case fans
  • couple of mechanical Hdd's
  • 30 inch Dell 3010 2560x1600 res monitor
  • 24 inch Dell 2410 1920x1080 res Monitor(i use dual monitors)

I dont mind reusing some of the components above like the PSU, case fans and of course my graphics card.

Type of stuff my Computer will be used for:

  • Editing High res DSLR quality Images
  • Coding
  • Gaming at 2560x1600 and above(may get a 4k monitor in the future)
  • Photoshopping
  • Video encoding at 1080p res or higher

I am pretty much out of the loop when it comes to what the latest tech is but from my brief search, socket 2011/x99 boards copped with the latest i7 haswell e i believe is the latest and greatest at the moment?

Also now uses ddr4 ram?

Is there any new sockets coming out in the horizon like within a month?

i dont want to purchase old socket 2011 if there is a new socket(broadwell? Skylake?) coming out real soon.

Also, want to be able to Overclock past 4ghz. i believe the last few cpu's like ivy bridge etc can easily OC to 4.5ghz range?

Thanks in advance

What do you use this build for?
What is your current CPU and motherboard?

All your current components don't need touching and can use them.
If you have a decent CPU already, then just replace the motherboard and away you go!

Hi i have noted down in my OP what i will use this PC for.

i currenty have a p6t delux mobo along with a 920 and a 5670 CPU.

Going my ebay, getting a 1366 Mobo is tricky.

Why not just change your mother board and processor (possibly RAM too depending on the options you go for)?

Thats exactly what i would like as i can re use lots of the stuff on my current rig anyway.

I would need a new case though as my case is falling apart so to speak

At a bare minimum i need a mobo, cpu and case

Don't ask how I missed that list... I have no idea. :p

Sounds like you would make good use of a i7 IMO.
An upgrade to Haswell sounds like a good move, grab yourself a Z97 board and a 4790k.

X99 right now is expensive and has little gains depending on what you're doing, Z97 will fit your needs perfectly.

If your case is coming to the end of it's life, grab a new one.
And maybe a fast 16GB set of RAM and see the triple channel stuff off, or grab a 4GB matching stick and pair that up for dual channel.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£25 Saving** £385.98
1 x Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11T3K2/16) £129.95
1 x Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Windowed Case - Black (CC-9011017-WW) £69.95
Total : £599.98 (includes shipping : £11.75).

My suggestion.

Thanks. Looks good.

Are those cpu's easy to OC?

Also i would need to add a new cpu cooler for my needs. something like this?

Yes, the H110 would be a good choice.
The base clock of the 4790k comes is 4ghz so that starts you off nicely.

Case is personal preference of course, so have a look around and see what takes your fancy but make sure the H110 will fit, the Corsair 300r is a very good case for the money.

If your looking at water cooling already what about one of the pre built watercooled cases?

It'll be a little more work to keep it maintained and topped up, but it'll give you the advantage of been able to upgrade the loop so you can add more radiators or GPU cooling.

If your already paying £170 for a case and a non upgradeable cooler then the extra £50-80 to go into a full loop isn't so steep.
