Hey up guys,

Right i am looking to build a new base unit this week,

I am not too worried if its amd or intel

Dont need the following,

Keyboard
Mouse
Screen
GFX have an ATI X1900xt
Hdds i have 2 x 250gb and 1 x 120gb sata II
Screen 26" sammy.

So im looking for a decent spec to play all games with nice eye candy, i dont really want cross fire, no point on a 1360x768 screen lol.

So fire away, also whats better an opty or x2??

What gives with the new intel conroes?

Budget is 1k of the sterling veriety.

Cheers lads

The Antec is a very nice case.... To be honest it isn't great with long graphics cards like the 1900 but it will fit... More importantly check if your PSU will be ok with the P180. Ideally it needs to be quite short and have long leads... Especially on the 4 pin power to the motherboard.

No need to spend 1K given you have a bunch of hardware already. This will do you very nicely, the mobo has had some teething troubles but I believe that they seemed to be faults with the initial batch and the spec is very very nice. PSU's leads are pretty long although don't know for sure if long enough.

so Lets see you need (I presume)

Motherboard
Memory
DVD-Writer
CPU
Case
PSU

You will struggle to spend £1000 I think... I would go for

Abit KN8 (Ultra) (£70)
2GB GelL DDR2 Memory (£150)
AMD AThlon X2 (£200)
NEC 4550 (£30)
Lian Li PC7+ (£55)
Tagan 530W PSU (£70)

Maybe you could get a slightly 'better' motherboard if you fancy splashing the cash....Or maybe spend a little more on the cpu (might want to consider single core too if you dont think you'll use the dual cores).

Hey guys,

That x4400+ looks a good spec,

As for dual core, with amd i consider it a must, i had a 3500+ when they came out on 939, and thought it was very sluggish in windows, good for games maybe but when working in windows it was a dog.

I guess this is now resolved with the dual core aspect.

Also would it be worth going for 4gb, just because i can?

Would the above spec be a good clocking setup?

Also throw this into perspective, I will be upgrading from.

Shuttle SD31P intel 945x based
p4 3.2 running at 3.8ghz
with 2gb of ram.

So would like a nice speed bump, and i know its not all about mhz lol. but would like to overclock and poss reserator cool my nxt rig.

Cheers again.

Not sure about the resonator compatability of the case but the CPU should be nicely overclockable. Motherboard too has some nice overclocking features such as a higher than normal HT (think that's the right one) Speed (1400 rather than the normal 1000/1100 ).

ok 4gb would be nice,

Also what ram would you say would be best used with the DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT.

The asus board mentioned above i have been reading up on, and it seems there could still be issues with the ati chipset.

Im not looking to run xfire or sli. But i want to be able to clock the chip to a decent speed.

Would 4gb also hinder the oc? If i remember rightly the older nf chipsets or was it the amd mem controller had issues with 4gb of ram

Not sure about anyone specing you an Intel setup at the moment...I run Intel usually and I wouldn't recommend it right now. Wait a few monthes for Conroe and I hope its a different story. However, telling somone (including myself!) to wait for a few monthes is like telling them to not worry about eating for a while. The only problem is, no matter what you upgrade to right now, unless you buy the intel 975 platform you'll have motherboard issues with the next release of chips (not sure about the 955, whether that can take the conroe architechture), including with AMD. But hey, I've diverted a little from the specing you a new system aspect of this thread, so I apologise!

Hey up,

Right as fender has said, i heard issues with amd running with all 4 slots occupied.

So i am thinking intel 975 chipset.

Would anyone like to throw a spec together for me lol.

I will work one out tomorrow, probably on the asus p5wd2-e 975x board, as i have had the 955 version before.

I do like the idea of amd, but i think i prefer what i know, and thats intel lol.

Edit i could live with 2gb if someone could come up with a killer amd spec.

I like feature rich mobo's and run 2 x 250gb sata II's in raid 0 so raid 0 support is a must. i know it will need a re-install ;)

I know what ya mean about holding off on upgrading screwi, but its like meeting a nice lass, you just have to dive in lol ;)

Cheers
