Hey all. You were fantastic helping me with my build a few years ago, am now looking to put something together for my son. 99% of his use will be gaming - Overwatch, Minecraft, WoW.. etc.

£1k budget. Have got monitor (1920x1080), keyboard and mouse.

Not quite up to speed but have put this together - any way I can shave a few quid and drop below £1k please? Yeah I know it's only £80 but it's a hard budget. Aesthetics aren't important with the case, I've just picked one that looked decent enough!

Ideally want to stick with the 1070, and gone for the i5 bundle as should be enough for his needs with that clock speed.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,079.86
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Yours ever grateful.

If you have a USB stick to download the latest Windows version from Microsoft's website, then just buy the cheaper DVD version and use its key.

Thermal paste supplied with cooler.

Get him a proper case that allows for very good cooling (when you add more fans later). That Kolink has a rubbish restrictive front grill on which the fan mounts that won't let much air if any pass through, and after a lot of fighting. I've used the Spec O1 in a build, and apart from having to pass through the CPU power cable and any rear fan cable through the motherboard cut-out before placing the motherboard, it's ace for cooling with that unrestricted front airflow. Less fans than the Kolink, just the one to begin with, but more cooling potential. And I bet it has better cooling to begin with than the Kolink with three fans and poor design.

Thanks for the quick replies both!

Mickyflinn - is there any real difference between the makes of graphics cards? £30 price difference there but the same make?
I'm erring more towards the 1070 as have read it's great value for performance, and am hoping this can keep him going for a good few years on 1 card.

Danny75 - Thanks for the input on the case, I didn't even spot that. Will definitely upgrade to the better case and look to drop some more fans in it. And the tip re Windows makes total sense to get me closer to my golden £1k mark, just for the small amount of work to set up a usb boot stick.

I'll tinker with my build and see what I can come up with again. Am looking forward to showing my lad all the components on his birthday and saying "build time!", as he'll have no idea it's coming :)
