Hi guys,

My brother has asked me to help him build a PC for gaming. When he saw mine he has realised that maybe his Playstation isn't quite so awesome after all.

Now I've not been in the loop for a while now so don't really know whether DDR4 and the new intel chips are even worth it on the budget he has.

He told me that he has a 1080p gaming monitor but he might upgrade that at some point but not for a while.

I've quickly had a look but any advice would be great.

So far I have

MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming Edition £280
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Intel Z97 £105
Intel Core i5 4690K £180
TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB £50

Am I going in the right direction with this?

Skylake doesn't cost much more so you might as well go for it.

Something like this would be a good start. You can go with the MSI card and Red ram if you want a bit of colour.

If your Brother wants to SLI in the future then change the psu to the EVGA G2 750W.

Do you also need a copy of windows ? Or a Mouse/Keyboard ?

The Phanteks Enthoo Pro M only comes with a single rear fan installed, so if you go with that case then you might want to add a couple of fans for the front.

Thanks for quick response, I'll let him know it is possible on his budget :P

He already has my old hand me down gaming mouse/keys so just a windows CD on top of that.

Check my sig. It cost me max 900£ to build that.
I would invest in some better cooler though, maybe:
Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced CPU Cooler

or

Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 CPU Cooler

Black radiates better. Besides CPU cooler is one of main components in any gaming PC, so I would get the best I can - since there is quite a margin in the config above, I would spend it on good air cooler or AIO.

A bit more expensive than lee's suggestion but i think 16gb of ram would be more preferable. I always have MSI afterburner/Riva tuner running ingame and i often surpass 8gb on a lot of games.

The Alpenfohn is a good cooler and will cope fine even with an overclock. You don't need to be spending £50+.

Would there be any advantages with getting one of these H100 all in one water cooling kits over these regular air HSFs ?

You would get better cooling performance than you would with a £20-£30 air cooler, but if your Brother isn't going to overclock (Or only a small overclock) then it might be a bit of a luxury.

If you do decide to go for a water cooler, then I would suggest the Corsair H110i GT over the H100i.

You can probably afford these components within a 1k budget:

* i5-6600K
* gigabyte z170 gaming 3
* 16GB DDR4
* samsung 850 evo

For the graphics I'd hold off until 2H2016. To get a 16nm GPU. And make-do with the Intel IGP until they come out next year. Or else some really cheap / old / previously owned graphics card.

No they do not. And yes - you are correct 4 cores is enough for the vast majority of games. Basically all of them...

i7 costs more money so that extra part of the budget could / should be put towards getting a faster GPU.
