Hi,

My parents call India a LOT! BT charge 1.5p min from out landline but I always see ads for 1p a min for calls to India from lebara mobile and vectone etc.

I was wondering how exactly it works?! I've tried reading all the t and CS and haven't found anything out of the ordinary but I can't believe that it's cheaper to call India than a uk mobile.

Can someone clarify the fees as I plan to leave BT soon. Is it just 1p a Kim on pay as you go with lebara to Indian landlines AND mobiles?

Thanks

One of my friends uses vectone, he says it is really good, you just need to top up like you do with a normal PAYG mobile.

The only bad thing he said was that he would get quite a few text messages from vectone about offers and etc.

So no hidden charges at all? Really 1p a min?

well try it.. its top up so really? no contracts and nothing of that kind just top up and see how much 5quid lasts you.. my mum uses Lebara to call eastern europe and its the cheapest we found

Well normally I would just try it, however Im changing Internet and phone and I am hoping to leave BT but if I do I lose the 1.5 p calls and virgin want 3p

Just hoping to get some user experiences before leaving BT.

Lebara is pretty good. There was leaflets in work about it but I dunno if we got rid, if we still have them ill scan one and post it up

Um.. I might be wrong, but I think that Lebara has a totally different number. Not +44.

And, although it's cheap to call India, etc... it will:
1) Cost more than usual to call UK landlines/mobiles
2) Cost the UK receiver as well

-- The above is just what I've heard so you may wish to confirm it's not the case.

Edit: re the second point above, I found it quite bizarre that it can be possible to be charged for answering a call. Anyone able to confirm this is possible, even if unrelated to Lebera, etc?

Yep, you can be charged for receiving a call :)

Re high uk rates, my dad is on a tesco contract. This is exclusively for India calls.

Just don't use them cards which make your call go over VOIP they are crap, lose connection , crap quality.

I found post office phone card good for Taiwan if that helps. Failing that Skype never fails

I call abroad a lot, use Nimbuzz installed on my phone. 1p per minute for landlines to most countries, between 1p and 17p for mobiles depending upon the country. It uses VOIP but is pretty stable, top up credit €10 at at time (+VAT) and it lasts for ages.

got them pics scanned but they are too big for photobucket and imageshack grrr, they are about 13mb and if you want ill email them to you if you pm me your email address.

<abroad based mvmo> standard setup is to buy airtime as a standard MVMO and then bulkbuy bandwidth to <other country>. The reason it's so cheap is because a lot of the cost of a call is the "charging receiver" (If I'm on Orange and I call Voda then Voda charge Orange for the privledge). This is known as a termination charge, you may have seen OFCOM shouting at the networks for charging 4p for them. This makes calls to other countries pretty cheap as termination charges are either beyond tiny / don't exist in many countries.
