Basically i've finally come to the realisation that I really, really, REALLY need a password manager.

Thus starting from 10.6.4 and a fresh install I want to have one of these pieces of software running.

Downloaded 1Password but $31 is quite a lot and more than im really willing to pay.

All I want is the ability to sync passwords between Mac Pro/MacBook Pro.

Backups are done by time machine anyway which I assume will backup all of the softwares master key files anyway.

Any opinions?

Personally I don't want my passwords going to a cloud that is anyone other than apple, and as I understand it 1Password sends the PWs to the keychain which are synced with Mobile Me?

Thanks for your opinions on the matter!

I've been using keepass, there are free versions for everything other than iPhone/iPad. Data stored in a encrypted file you can put where you like. It's open source too.

I use 1Password + Dropbox.

The MobileMe sync support is flaky because it simply isn’t fast enough. They even advise not to use MobileMe in the FAQ pages, so it’s something they clearly recommend against, and a shame because I pay for MobileMe.

Anyway, 1Password generates a 1password.agilekeychain file, this is where your passwords/serials etc are stored (this is a proprietary encrypted file). The app itself can unlock this file with a “master password” so without the master password you cannot open the app or get access to the passwords so it doesn’t matter where you store the agilekeychain file.

The hard part is changing your passwords on all your sites, but you don’t have to do them all at once.

1Password will even put a “1P” icon on the Safari bar, so you can click a button and have the app automatically go to a site and log you in. Also, by syncing your bookmarks (via the app) you can use this feature on the iPhone/iPad browser too, (which I love) because remembering “KajKeuw_281?../!” can become a problem

Another KeePass user here. Works under OS X, on my Android phone and within Windows. Just need that iPad/iPhone version to complete the set.

I have been having problems using 1Password anywhere lately though.

Each time I tried to access my 1Password.agilekeychain file using Google Chrome (at Work) I'd get an error message like this..

I emailed 1Password support, and they recommended to delete the "Style" folder (by navigating package resources in the main app on OS X), which fixed it for all of 2 minutes, so now, access on the work PC relies on cookies and having to get my iPhone out to look at passwords :(

It's always worked flawlessly on OS X though, and I don't want to re-add all my passwords, IDs etc, so I'm living with it.

The iPhone/iPad app has just been updated so it can sync from Dropbox rather than having to faff about with WiFi. This is good news.

I use Lastpass, really simple, has a little bookmarklet in Safari, when on page that needs logging in click on it and it autofills and logs in. They also do iPad/iPhone apps, plus IE/Chrome/FF plugins which all seem to work well.

1Password Pro users

How do you integrate it with Safari?
I prefer to use Safari for browsing but have my login info for sites stored in 1Password Pro. How do i get them both to work together?

in OSX it should just add a button to safari that you click everytime you want to fill in a login etc.

it should also prompt you when you log into a site it doesn't recognise it will prompt to add a new login.

You can also right click on the 1password icon on the dock and select go and fill..... and it will open the browser, the site and log you in.

On the iphone, you can either copy/paste or use the browser within 1password (assume its based on safari). The newest version has fast switching so cut and pasting isn't too bad now.

I also use Lastpass on my MacBook, iMac and work PC. Works nicely between all three machines very well :D.

I use KeePass on my MBP, Windows and my iPhone. Not sure why everyone says there isn't an iPhone flavour! :p

I would buy 1Password, but it looks like I would need to pay twice - once for the OS X version and again for the iPhone app. I know there is a Windows BETA, but will that also then require a third license, or will it use the OS X license?
