First time overcloker here, I've read the basic guide and to be honest most of it goes over my head so please be kind, and advance apologies for any dumb questions.

I've just built my first machine from scratch, and enjoyed it. Now though its time to OC. Though Im nervous as I'm not even sure if the temps I'm getting without any OC are high or not. My suspision is a bit high.

Tagan TG800-U25 800W PSU
Lian-Li PC-7 Case
BFG nForce 680i Mobo
GeIL 2*1GB PC6400C4 800Mhz DDR2 RAM
BFG Geoforce 8800 GTS GPU
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (was a nightmare to get seated but I think I finally got it right)
C2D E6300 1.86GHz
Note: I did not use any additional cooling paste

All BIOS settings are at default, except fans which are manual set to 100%

This is currently giving me CPU temps of 36-37 on both cores, going up to 59-62 at 100% load. I've used TAT to get the temps..

What I wanted to know is if these temps are good and if I'm safe to start OC'ing. I'd also like to know what temps, nonstressed and under load, I should be aiming for?

I don't have aims to OC this as far as possible, just to get the machine running at what ever speed it can do without taking too many risks. If any one could suggest what settings I could use in the BIOS to acheive this that would make my day.

Any help appreciated.

You want to keep temps below 60c under full load really.

I'd say those temps are a bit high.. I idle at around 46c and full load of just under 60c, that's with the same cooler as you and running at 3.5Ghz with 1.4v.

Well it’s been a few days and I’ve had some fun playing around. I reseated the cooler and the temps dropped leaving me some room to start my 1st OC.

I now have the machine running 8 hours stable with Orthos @ 3Ghz. It runs at about 63c under full load in TAT, less under Orthos. If I up the FSB much higher though I get the following message;

"Warning!, System is now in safe mode, please reset CPU or memory frequency". If I continue to boot Im throttled to default speeds.

I'm using the following settings;

FSB 1715Mhz
Mem 800Mhz
Timings 4-4-4-12 2t
Advanced Memory Settings @ Auto
CPU Core 1.35v
CPU FSB 1.2v
Memory 2v

I'm kind of happy to have got it where it is to be honest, but I've started to enjoy pushing it as far as I can. I would improve the cooler if I thought that the temperature was the limiting factor. I have a feeling though that it’s something else.

I’d really appreciate a few opinions on this setup and what I could do to push it further or if this BIOS warning is an indicator that even if I improved cooling I would not be able to speed it up much more.

edit. Almost forgot the Fan was set to 80% when recording the temps.

Last Bump, then Im going to presume Ive reached some kind of limit with the Processor and MoBo and thats giving me the "Warning!, System is now in safe mode, please reset CPU or memory frequency" message.

try giving fsb 1.5v, up cpu vcore to 1.45v these are my settings at 3.2gig

also this mem is ratted upto 2.3 so dont be frightened of trying a bit more through it

Interesting stuff, I haven't ever overclocked myself. I overclocked a 3DFX Voodoo3 about 4 years ago and had problems with that and since then I was put off. After reading this little thread starting to get intrigued to overclock a little.

Are you going to overclock memory and GPU when you are satisfied?

Thanks Stinka. I upped it to 3.2Ghz, then upped the voltages as you suggested, CPU core to 1.5, CPU FSB 1.4 (also tried 1.5, as no 1.45 option), Memory to 2.1, then to 2.2. I also tried running the Memory at 1000Mhz using all the increased voltages as above.

I tried linking the FSB and memory, running it at 1:1, 5:4, 3:2, Synch Mode.

And still it will not get past the BIOS Warning as above!

I almost think there is some 'safety' feature that I have failed to disable thats causing it, though I have looked and looked with no joy.

I guess 3Ghz is the limit Im going to reach, I just wish I'd spent a little more and got the EVGA Mobo.

Mishima - Yep, planning on trying to get the memory running a little higher now while still @ 3ghz cpu. Im thinking upping memory to 900Mhz with the timings as stated above 4-4-4-12. It boots to windows like that, but no time tonight to run any stability checks. If thats ok then gpu would be next, I read that rivasomething or other is the best way to clock a nvidia card.

If anyone reads the above and thinks Im doing something horribly wrong please shout.

its deffinately voltage mate, these boards are so picky about getting it right.

1.5v fsb is essential, and when overclocking dont go more than 40mhz fsb (qdr) at a time

if it were me id go back to stock

put fsb volts up to 1.5

put cpu vcore at 1.45

give ram 2.2v

and start pushing it at 40 mhz increments keeping memory around 800 mhz unlinked 4-4-4-15
