It will be better than having carpet beneath it, with carpet the case sinks down as mentioned so the fan gets less space to suck air into, & it can suck all the dust that's settled.

Wood is solid and will ensure that 40mm gap remains, also less fluff and dust!
 
it will be ok, just reduces the amount of dust/crap that it will suck in, and giving the PSU a easier life :)

ive got mine on a bit of cardboard from the case's box! :D lol
 
Nice neat job congrats enjoy :) feels good building your 1st pc..I remember building mine on christmas eve , It was the new epox nforce2 mobo from overclockers :)
I recommend the Cherry CyMotion Expert keyboards from ocuk nice quiet and really good feel,great value
