Looking to buy my first camcorder, will just be used to capture my little one growing up!
Budget is around 1k, but happy to spend less or a bit more. I've read a lot about 4k, but I don't even have a TV capable of that!

Either looking to get a cheaper camcorder now, and upgrade in a few years. Or spend a bit more to future proof.

Any recommendations? Off to jessops/John Lewis tomorrow

You have a massive choice from traditional camcorders, enthusiast cameras to mobile phones - all can record competent 4K footage.

I can't really see the point of camcorders these days, something like the Panasonic gx85 can record stabilised 4K and excellent stills in a small package.

I'll have a look at the gx85, we have a decent canon dslr for pictures.
Just after something which will produce good video and sound content.

I would say 4k is a waste of time and storage for family videos that will sadly very rarely be watched and when you look back in 60 years you won't be bothered by the resolution much like my parents don't moan about the vhs and cine films of our youth they just smile and reminisce.

I'd also second the buy a decent stills camera that takes great video some of the 4/3 cameras are great and will offer you a really good portable stills/video setup.
