hello,

i have completed my 1st new build last night, but i cant get the graphics to work

i have a gigabyte ex58-ud5 motherboard and a corsair TW650w PSU.

this is what i have done:

inserted the graphics into the PCI slot, plugged in the PSU lead labelled PCI-E, and then plugged the PDIF lead into the SPDIF socket on the motherboard!

i get my PC powered up everything comes on apart from my monitor! nothing displays on there!

what have i done wrong?

hope it is nothing i have broken! :(

please can someone help me as to what i can do?!

thanks

What GFX Card is it?

Have you tried both DVI ports on the back of the card. I know many cards will only give a signal to one DVI port as the other would be for a dual monitor setup.

i have a geforce 9800 GT

i have tried both monitor ports, still no luck. :(

where do i plug both into? i only have one port at the back of the graphics card for the PCI-E plug

thanks for ur suggestions

9800GT usually only has one power connector.

This isn't deffinatly a GPU error, could be RAM incompatible with motherboard or several other issues.

sry I got confused with previous post Id been reading, you dint specify which card so there was no way for me to know how many connectors it required, my bad
Other than the usual reseating and checking all connectors then yeah souns like bad card, can you test in old machine or anything?

Have you attached the little case speaker, most motherboards have beep "POST" codes which are used when the system detects a problem with the graphics card (+ other faults)

Does the system beep or do anything when you power it on, or do the fans just spin up etc.

start your computer up with just 1 stick of ram then go into bios and set the recommended voltages for your ram

sorry for not replying to your messages all day, ben at uni! thank you all for your posts! i will try the 1 stick of RAM thing when i get home tomorrow

and a reply to the post about beeps....there is no beeps, just the fans come on etc....

maybe i should buy a new graphics card?

Are you using a CPU cooler with a bolted on backplate? sometimes these can prevent normal booting because they are on too tight and/or shorting the motherboard.

good idea! thank you! i will also try this, didnt end up going home today so i will give it a go!

i will say something though, i got the thermol paste on the hinge of the CPU socket, i wiped it off thoroughly, is this ok?!

Not usually a problem, if you'd accidentally got a blob in amongst the pins that might be another problem depending on the electrical conductivity of the paste.

Has your monitor been working on another pc?
the reason I asked is someone I know installed windows 7 with out problems
until the start up screen and the monitor just went off(red light)
I fixed it by resetting the monitor have you got another monitor you could try?
What cable are you using for the connection from the card to the monitor?

Just checked the gigabyte site and it says the mobo has an "Onboard Debug LED display simplifies motherboard troubleshooting" can you see the LED? What's it doing?

i have tried the graphics card back in the old computer and it dont work so i think it is broken, not 100% sure, i am going to buy a new one so i will find out.... thanks to everyone for your help! :) wish me luck! .....any suggestions on a good graphics card without spending too much money?

Depends on what you mean by "too much". 4770 is considered a sound investment for a mid range price. I've got a 4670 and that's alright for playing newer games on medium to high settings.
