Hey all, I'm planning on building a new PC from scratch and it is my first time doing so, so I think I'll need a hand. First off – I know that lots of you will have seen this type of post before so if you can’t be arsed with my uninformed questions then you need not read any further. I am also enlightened to the fact that my PC hardware is old... bear with me please I’m trying to learn 

Basically, I feel my current PC is outdated for my needs. Right now, I want to be able to run top-end games on highest settings with full performance and the best possible server connectivity. I’d also like to be able to set up a dual monitor system and run multiple applications at once including games, music, downloads, streaming etc... Ideally, I want my new build to be able to handle everything for the next 5 years until I upgrade. I am not, however, planning on running heavy duty graphic design software or suchlike, nor am I planning on overclocking (until I know enough about it to do it).

Why do I think I need an upgrade? Well my PC is slow to handle multiple applications at a time. However, I notice the real problems in gaming (for which I use my PC the most). Most recently, I find that Diablo 3 beta cannot handle top settings and slows down even further with multiple players on-screen and online. Games like BF3 and COD: MW3 barely work or do not work at all and the problems will keep coming as newer, more demanding software is released.

So I’m looking to try and build my own. I know this is possible and I’ve been reading up a fair bit about how to do it. It will be cheaper than buying the usual store-made **** that I usually end up with and be faster and longer-lasting to boot. But I’ve never done this before so I need your input into the best price, hardware and compatibility for that hardware.

Here’s my current set-up and the reason for my problems:

1. Motherboard – Dell Dimension 5150
2. CPU - Intel Pentium D 2.66GHz (Dual Core)
3. RAM - 3GB
4. Graphics Card - Nvidia GeForce 9600 GSO 512
5. HD – Western Digital (500GB) (WD5000AAKS) ATA Device
6. PSU – Dell H305P-00 (305W
7. Case - Dell Dimension 5150
9. DVD-ROM optical drive, Blu-ray/DVD-RW optical drive, floppy drive
10. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Noob questions inc...

- I know I don’t have enough RAM to play these games. I would like 8GB but my MOBO doesn’t support it so I’ll need a new one. Am I right in saying that my MOBO speed needs to be compatible with both CPU and RAM speeds? Will I need 16GB of RAM or is this overkill?
- I don’t think my CPU is cutting it either, Intel core-i7 range seems overkill? Is cache size relevant? Do I need quad-core over dual-core? Will I need anything other than the stock heatsink?
- Graphics Card is outdated too. GeForce GTX 680 looks sick but way expensive ATM. Can I get something else that will last me and save me pennies? I’m looking at something with at least 1GB vRAM and ability to handle multi-screen.
- Can I transfer my current Hard Drive, optical and floppy drives? Will they be compatible or would I be better off buying a bigger HD? Again, is HD cache size relevant? What about SSD’s and RPMs?
- What PSU wattage/voltage am I looking at for this?
- Suggestions for a solid and easy to use case? Again, will I need to choose one for cooling purposes?
- I’ll need to re-purchase another copy of Windows 7 right? And this will need to be 64-bit to be able to handle 8GB RAM is this right?

OK this is what I’m looking at At the moment (to be edited upon finding more suitable parts). I’d like to set a budget of 800 pounds, nearer 6/700 if possible but I know certain prices = best quality for some parts and, as I said, I want some longevity before I need to upgrade again:

MOBO: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-483-AS
CPU: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-368-IN
RAM: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-299-CS
GFX: Enlighten me please, I assume I don’t need a GTX 680
PSU: Again, what do I need? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-022-CS
Case: Suggestions? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-250-CM

Current Total: 451.95 not including GFX. Room for a cheaper PSU and case possibly.

If you’ve read through all this, thank you! I really appreciate your help!

Alternate with a different case and better motherboard (though a last gen Z68 one). Hard to say if you actually need a Z77 mobo with SB though, apart from PCIe 3.0 and native USB 3.0 there's not much major difference.

EDIT: Could swap the UD5 for the Asus P8Z77-V if you want to.

1) You will definitely need a motherboard that is compatible with RAM & CPU and 8gb of ram would serve you fine but for the minor price difference you might as well get 16gb

2) The i5 sandybridge is fine, you may want to upgrade your heatsink but it's completely optional

3)The Asus HD 6850?

4)Your current HD,optical and floppy drives seem fine and should be ok to transfer straight away.

5)XFX Pro 550W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' should do the trick!

6)Xigmatek Asgard Pro Gaming Case looks like a pretty good option

7)If you didn't buy a family pack of windows (which I presume you never) then yes, you will need a new copy of windows and it will need to be 64bit to cope

Also, may I recommend this ram, 16gb and cheap, but it'son offer for this week only so buy fast!

if u have the retail version of windows u dont need to get a new one only if u have the OEM version will u need to get a new one.
vinni3 specs are good ones. 8gb for gaming is a bit overkill, as games only use about 3-4 max currently. so 16gb will be overkill + will need the professional windows for 16gb.
case is rly ur own choice which u like the most

Get OEM Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor as you dont need included cooler. saving 30 quid. I would get corsair hx psu it is better than ocz... and kingstong 8gb mem as it is more environmentally and socially responsible company. If you buy cheap someone pays for it somewhere. Be good to your self and others is a great skill.

Thanks to all for the replies and specs. Really helpful. About a few things:

VTX3D HD 7850 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Dirt3 PC Game is now up in price from that listed. Is there now a more cost-effective card to get or is this still it for my price range? Also are we all AMD fans or has anyone got anything to say about Nvidia? I was looking at GTX 560 ti?

I know only a little about SSDs. Would adding one to my system make a noticeable difference? Its for faster boot speeds and loads speeds right? Is this more or less a necessity for high-speed PCs these days?

Would you mind explaining the difference between modular and non-modular PSUs and if one might be preferred over the other?

Also... thinking about the new release of ivybridge. What are your thoughts about: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-202-MS

Should I wait for release of ivybridge to compare the new processors or, at the very least, see if prices for sandyBs go down?

Thanks again!

To be honest, I'm more of an Nvidia fan - but you can't argue with the 7850s performance/price/overclocking ability -[especially with a free game]! See this thread about them:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18389760

So I'd stick with a 7850.

With your budget, I'd not skip an SSD for anything! They help with boot/loading times and make the system generally more responsive... when you've got one you wont want to go back.

Would you mind explaining the difference between modular and non-modular PSUs and if one might be preferred over the other?

Modular PSUs come with some cables detached from the PSU - and so you just use the ones you need, to help with cable management :)

Also... thinking about the new release of ivybridge. What are your thoughts about: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-202-MS

This is a great Z77 board, with crossfire/SLI support:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-390-GI

or this is a bit cheaper and ideal for one GPU:

Should I wait for release of ivybridge to compare the new processors or, at the very least, see if prices for sandyBs go down?
If you can wait I'd say it's probably worth it, but if you buy now you'll still get a very nice PC :)

OK, having watched the release of new intel ivybridge chips pretty closely, here is my near-finished build:

Thoughts/advice please? :)

Looks pretty good!

That GPU is on offer today, so be sure to order it today to get the good deal :)

Only think I'd change is the case, the 300 is getting on a bit now and you could get something better for your money. Some suggestions:

BitFenix Shinobi
Zalman Z9 Plus
Cooler Master Elite 430
Xigmatek Asgard Pro

Argh! More choices... but you're right, value and quality on offer is better, thanks.

Can you tell me why? Cheers.

Can you tell me why? Cheers.

It has a UK based 3year warranty and Gigabytes customer service is spot on with a very fast turn around time., the MSI has a 3year warranty, but the retailer handles it on behalf of them

Their range of Z77 boards seem to be brilliant performers too.

That's what i would aim for. The RAM is cheaper but the colour does clash so wouldnt blame you for sticking with the black vengeance LP.

The case has 4 120mm fans, a fan controller with digital temp display and cable management. No USB3 ports but you could add a card reader with USB3 at the front cheaply now or later in the 3.5 inch bay.

PSU is modular so no excess cabling getting in the way, this improves airflow and keeps temps low. If you want to overclock your CPU on the stock heatsink having a tidy case with plenty of fans is going to help.

You can easily access the rear of the mobo in the case, so if you want to swap out the heatsink for a better one you dont have to completely disassemble the kit from the case.

The other guys have covered your mobo question. If you have any more or problems come build day.....you know where to find us :)
