Im 25, 5'9 and 11 stone 3. I had a weight lifting workout programme sorted out for me today by one of the instructors at my local gym. I've just finished 3 months of cardio work in an attempt to get my bodyfat % down which has worked to some extent, although i still have a few wobbly bits that need seeing to. Hopefully lifting weights will help with this as to be honest im extremely bored of cardio work at the moment.

I know i need to eat right and about 6 times a day if im going to take this seriously. Im about to invest in some whey protein - is this a good idea to begin with? If so which brand and where should i buy from? Im a bit concerned about consuming loads of calories as ive just spent the past few months keeping them to a minimum.

One thing i was VERY concious of was how small i was in comparison to everyone else in the free weights room, ALL of the guys in there were HUGE which made me feel really pathetic. Im worried this will put me off after a while and crap on my confidence...however if i can visually see a difference in my physique im sure this will spur me on which leads me to my next question - how long does it take before you start to see results? The plan ive had written up involves 3 visits to the gym a week. I know there should be suitable rest period for the muscles to repair after a workout but is 3 days out of 7 enough for a weight lifting noob? Any advice will be really appreciated!

Just gonna say that even though you may feel pathetic lol. All the tanks you see they started on low weights in the beggining. It's a case of working your way up and getting better at it.

It'll only take a couple of days before you start to notice new muscles pop up while taking protein and weight lifting. Really helps in knowing it's working

I would recommend posting the routine up, some of the routines they give out aren't worth the paper they are written on and wont get you very far at all.

Yes whey is good to begin with, taking 30g in water with carbs (oats etc) after your workout is essential after a weights session imo.

www.myprotein.co.uk is a favourite around here for whey, use the code www.bulkpowders.co.uk in the pricematcher on the homepage to get 5kg unflavoured concentrate euro 80 for £31.95. At the moment i think thats the cheapest available, although there may be other codes that offer it cheaper that im unaware of.

Use the code MP18875 for 5% discount on your first order ;)

As long as your diet is in check, and your eating all good foods, the amount of fat you put on will be kept to a minimum, as your putting on muscle, it'll offset the fat in terms of looks imo so wouldn't worry about that.

They all started off somewhere, theres plenty of skinny guys in the weights room i go too (including me not that long ago) and it makes no difference whether your massive or skinny imo.

If your diet and routine are good, and you stick to them, in the first 6 months, you will make the best gains in your life. It depends on the person really, but after a month or two i reckon you will see the difference and it certainly gives the confidence a good boost.

Keep small goals that are reachable, stick to them and before you know it you'll be setting yourself knew ones :)

for 95% of people i agree fully, something that people tend to forget :D

Thanks for the replies chaps, about to make a purchase from the recommended suppliers this minute. Just before i do, would you suggest starting with just whey protein to begin with or maybe going for something with creatine in it?

You don't need creatine yet :)
