Hi,

I'm gonna be upgrading my system tomorrow from a 1st gen I5-760 to a Sandybridge Z77 board and 3570K.

My question is about whether I should be revoking my limited activation games in advance, in case I have to reinstall W7 64.

So basically I'm asking anyone who has done the same upgrade (I5 1st gen to 3rd gen, H55 chipset to Z77) whether their existing W7 windows install booted up after the upgrade, or whether they had to reinstall it.

Obviously if I just swap the hardware and W7 doesn't boot, I'm looking at either swapping all the hardware back (a PITA) or losing some activations.

Cheers.

All sata, 2 mechanicals, 1 ssd.

IIRC I have AHCI turned on as well, and will be turning it on for the new mobo too. Fingers crossed that avoids major problems.

I went from a P45 to P67 with the same hdd and had no problems. Just uninstalled as much as I could, all mobo chipset installation and drivers.
Although most people will tell you to do a clean install. Also found a lot of my games were unaffected and some just updated the new system address.

I did this coming from an LGA775 board to a Z77, Windows 7 was on my SSD and once plugged in it booted fine, everything worked, just installed the required drivers for lan and usb etc. Oh and I also uninstalled all the old drivers before the pull.

Cheers guys.

Looks like OcUK didn't ship it today after all, disappointing when I could select the 29th as my delivery day. Makes me wonder if I'll be waiting till the 4th now.

Cheers for the help guys, new build went very smoothly.

Very impressed with how much quicker 3rd gen I5s are vs 1st gen. With my old I5-760 overclocked to 3.8 I'd get 5400 cpu mark, and with the 3570K at stock I get 7200 :o

Planetside 2 - noticeably smoother too, maybe another 8-10 fps average.
