1T-2T: Performance Hit?

Hello again. :)

At the moment I "only" have 1GB of OCZ dual channel memory. I am thinking of upgrading to 2GB, but I'd rather get the same as I have already.

IIRC if I have two dual channel kits, the memory will change to 2T. What will that do to performance in games?

Is it worth around double to get 2x1GB sticks instead? (Someone will buy my OCZ memory for £40 though)

Thanks, Chris

What kind of ram is your OCZ stuff is it just normal 200mhz stuff or shiny 250mhz or ultra shiny 275mhz ?

The difference will be about 1-2% which ain't much

Dropping from 1T to 2T will loose around 2-3% in general performance. However, if you play recent games the hit will be more than counteracted by doubling the memory.

In real terms, you will notice the performance jump going from 1GB to 2GB, but you will not notice the change from 1T to 2T.

Just make sure you mobo has no issues running 4 sticks of ram.

I run 4 x 512mb rubbish ram @ 2t. The performance gain by increasing ram from 1gig to 2gig by far outweighs the performance hit of running at 2t. I have seen a thread on a forum (I just googled can tremember where it was at) which discussed it in detail and a guy ran some benches. To cut a long story short the difference was between 2-5% most of the time. A lot of people often claim its more like 20% though which I dont agree with.

In fact, a lot of people when overclocking, will deliberately drop their command rate to 2t, in order to squeeze out more of an overclock from their CPU....so in some cases megahertz gained on an overclock is a benefit on overall performance even when having to run at 2t.

So in summary, you would not notice the difference EVER imo, and only in benches that would specifically be designed to show up this "performance hit".

Yeah one of the main reasons people knock runing 4 x 512mb of ram, is you "MAY" run into hassle when trying to overclock the ram, as their is more chance of a poor stick holding you back. Plus some mobos just are poor at running 4 sticks and are particularly flakey at it causing instability.

I agree....save yourself some cash and get 4x512 imo.

The 20% drop is in certain bandwith benchmarks

Dont bother with high frequency ram, just buy DDR400 with the lowest latencies you can afford
