2.2i Astra Bertone

Or a Peugeot 406 coupe, you could get a similar age/mileage D9 facelift with the 210hp V6 for around that money with some careful looking... (Or the 160hp 2.2 petrol which isn't bad)

I had one of these with this engine and it was alright. I love the idea that people are suggesting the 2 litre focus engine is better when it's less powerful all round and has worse mpg. I accept the focus is better handling but personally I would say the Astra engine is the better of the two.

As others have said servicing is cheap and mine was fairly reliable. It chewed through a fair bit of oil and I had problems with the egr valve but other than that it gave me no problems to speak off. It's not a slow car by any means and is quick enough of the line. Nice and quiet sat at 70 on the motorway with it being a coupe and with it only having 5 gears it always felt like it was in the power band for overtaking without having to drop a cog. Of course you would need to drop a gear or 2 on single track roads but that's not a big ask. Personally I thought it was pretty capable in the bends. It seemed to be able to take bends at very quick speeds with no issue. Unfortunately the steering was rubbish. It was like holding a completely detached dinner plate and it simply gave me no feeling or confidence in what the car was doing. Ultimately that was the reason I got rid of it as it was boring, but it was certainly a capable car.

One thing I was surprised with was the stock speakers. It was rubbish with the standard HU but they were incredibly impressive with an after market HU driving them.
