I currently own a Samsung Galaxy S with 2.2.1 JPY firmware, while i love this mobile, I do feel like selling it on & getting an iphone 5 next year.

Here's why

With Gingerbread out now on the new Nexus S, which is basically the same hardware as the Galaxy S, there might not be an update to 2.3 fo the Galaxy S, Samsung haven't offically comfimed there is, there answer is were looking into it, which means they won't going of their history.

Because as from next Spring they got the Galaxy S II lined up for release that will come with 2.3 & be wanting people to upgrade.

Same goes for HTC & the likes aswell, nobody has offically comfirmed that 2.3will come to current top end Android mobile's.

So those of us with HTC Desires & Galaxy S will basically become outdated in a few months as we proberly not get an offical 2.3 release.

Way things are going Smartphones makers will only bring the latest Android OS to their latest mobiles, just so you buy the latest & greatest, even though the last top handsets would have no problem running the latest Android OS, & i personally im not going to spend £400 every 6 months on a mobile just to have the latest software.

This is why im considering an iphone next year, at least they support their older hardware with updates, the iphone 3G is still supported and that getting on for 2 years old now, I bet you your HTC or Sammy Galaxy S will have ball all support by then.

This is way most people on android systems with older phones are going to unroot because there are much better ROM's out there which are better supported then stock ROM's, the HTC Desire is has already been converted to 2.3 with a custom ROM but the those ROM's are not fully ready because of quite a lot of bugs that need ironing out.

Same goes with the Galaxy S they currently doing a custom rom with 2.3 but like the HTC they still have a few bugs to sort out first, if they getting working 100% I put a 2.3 custom rom on my SGS.

But still it would be nice if they supported there mobiles properly, instead of leaving them dead in the water when the next top end is released.

Is it? I was under the impression iOS 4 and above were only available on the 3GS and above?

No, in fact 3G owners are pretty much forced to use iOS 4 despite it being a slow, finicky piece of crap. I'm not sure about the differences between a normal device and one that's been jailbroken, but if you downgrade your version of iOS then you can't download apps from the App Store anymore, it will tell you that you need to have version 4 even if you don't. Also I don't know if I'd agree with the statement that Apple still support the 3G, maybe in terms of when you plug it into your computer it updates now and then yeah, but the amount of problems people have had with iOS 4 and the 3G is pretty poor considering Apple are supposed to be good at this kind of stuff.

The 3G isn't exactly supported, it can't do secure exchange integration with Exchange 2010 and doesn't do multi tasking.

I don't see what the big deal is, iPhone users still need to buy a new handset every year if they want the latest iPhone and the latest features.

I have faith in HTC, they rolled out Froyo within 6 weeks.

Samsung will probably screw you over though if history is to be believed.

I dont really see the problem as long as there is a custom rom its all good, the custom roms are mostly a lot better than the stock roms anyways.

As longs as the new Apps are compatible with 2.1 etc what's the problem ?

If all you're after is shiney new OS/hardware you'll just have to keep on spending whatever the phone OS/make is .

Just put Oxygen Android 2.3 on my Desire.

Its running ADW Launcher EX and i've disabled all animations so the menus are very snappy and responsive.

Only thing I miss is the Sense Internet Bookmarks widget. The rest is pretty much the same

The phone is running at 1150mhz or near enough now and is super quick. Can't be assed to wait for HTC to release their version.

Even if Samsung don't release an official version, I'm sure a user-made one will appear in working form soon enough ;).
Plus, I don't really thing 2.3 brings that much to the table, it's nice to have, but not enough on its own to make me consider changing the phone, yet.

iphone 5? whats that going to add - a little light on the bottom so you can see in the dark...ios is donky doodoo, and already after 3 models of the iphone apple are not supporting their earlier phones (well they say they are but there not)

2.3 will no doubt work with most current phones, its not a massive update really just a bit of tweaking under the hood. HTC and samsung are normally good with getting the updates out, its mainly the networks that slow this down...but thats why you need to have your phone rooted! and as far as im aware even the sony x10 now has 2.1 and if thats been updated no matter how long it took , it proves that devs are fully behind getting the software out onto a multitude of phones.

I would agree with HTC, but Samsung are AWFUL in getting updates out and discontinuing support for older handsets. FroYo only came out on Kies last month for the Galaxy S, months and months after it was released.

it's all part of artificial obsolescence , a lot of phones that could be upgraded to gingerbread won't be because they want you to buy new phones.

i rooted my Desire HD and installed cyanogen on it. it's out of date when i say it is, not when htc decide it is.

I'm not sure they were ever going to charge for it anyway.

But if his phone isn't going to be updated he can only get gingerbread by buying a new device or forgetting about gingerbread and moving over to Apple. Both alternatives cost money. Rooting is free, that was my point.
