£2-3k to spend on a second car.

I'm currently looking around for my second car after 2 years driving. I'm 20 years old so my choice is somewhat limited still but I really feel like getting something a bit sporty while I'm still young, but the car also needs to be practical as I do frequent 120 mile round trips on the m6.

Insurance isn't really a problem as I have a few years NCB and live in a decent area. However I am restricted as insurers simply will not insure me on certain cars (Most things with a turbo).

The choices... at first I thought mx5. But now I'm put off by the cold weather and what it would be like on the motorway. Could anyone shed some light on this?

I really would like a FTO but I simply cannot get insurance on one until I'm 21.

Basically what I'm asking is what other cars should I be considering in this price range? I'm set on getting a 'sporty' car, I just want something I can have a bit more fun in than my old diesel Focus.

Thanks for any help.

Sorry if you don't like this suggestion but what about a Saxo VTS? If you can get past the chav-factor I think they look good standard and they are really nippy. The VTRs are the kids ones but the VTS is quite a bit better, just don't crash it as you'll likely die seeing as they're made from tinfoil.

Why do you need a second car to be able to do 120-mile trips if you have your diesel Focus?

Surely you'd be better off chopping the Focus in and buying a single car worth £4k... much better!

Have a look at the Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC :)

You'll get a 4th gen (92-96) for under 2k, and you'll get a 5th gen (97-02) starting at around £3k.

It's his second car, not a second car. Ie, the Focus was his first car.

Opps.. Must learn to read... Anyway, either the Prelude as suggested or for the two-seater debate it's either an MX5 or MR2.. at 20 you shouldn't have a problem insuring either of them!

MX5 is ok on the motorway, (Mk2 I have) It's certainly not as comfortable as the Accord. It does rattle and there is wind noise, but it is a softtop convertible, so you expect that.

For winter driving you always have the option of a hardtop, but I don't find I need it. If anything the cabin heats up a lot faster than a saloon as the space is smaller. Get leather heated seats for double the effect.

I'd love a 5th gen 'lube but insurance still seems mental even at 24* with 3 years ncb :(

I'd be looking at mx5's though, can't be that bad for the odd journey on the motorway. Or this forums will have you believe that it's impossible to do a motorway journey in anything smaller than a Merc S class! :p

*Damnit I was wishing I was still 23 :o

Hehe, 'lube' .. I'm sure you mean 'lude but it made me laugh!

I bought this at 20 for 2K and insurance in my own name for around 1400 TPFT.

2litre turbo, and pretty nippy. :)

Come up with 4k and you can have my escort in a few weeks.......

The problem you have (and I went thru the same thing, even considering £1200 delta integrales ) is champagne ideas on lemonade pockets.

99% of cars that may once have been quick, stylish and reliable for the motorway, are simply not that way anymore, because they will be the wrong side of ten years old. and £2-3k is the real budget end of things for cars of this genre.

considered an old 535i? Mate of mine bought one and it was fairly quick, easy to get the back end out on and very comfy. It's now in the scrappers and he is on a drink drive ban tho.
