I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 that should run at 2.4Ghz but it's now running at 1.6Ghz with a voltage of between 1.15 and 1.2. So CPU-Z tells me anyway.

Is this the thermal throttling thing? Speenfan says the CPU is running at 55C so is this to hot? Or is my CPU broken?

That is very hot, but the temp is nothing to do with why it's at 1.6. It's just the SpeedStep kicking in - put some load on it and it will go back to 2.4.

You need to check your cooling if you're idling at 55 even with SpeedStep on. Make sure the CPU fan is mounted correctly and that the fan is working and isn't full of dust.

have you got it in a shuttle sd37p2?

if so then mine is idling at 51 odd .... so i'm in the same boat...

did you put themal paste all over the chip when you put it in? think with artic silver you are suppost to just put a line down the middle?

i'm considering buying quiet fans and having them on higher rpm...

I got similar results when in VISTA but when i boot in XP cpu-z shows the right clock speed. I believe its something to do with cpu-z and vista.

Are you running Vista?

I am running Vista but I think it is slowing down. When I play a game it seems to go really slow so the speed must be dropping more. I've ordered a new heatsink/fan (the stock one was always quite crap, used to idle at about 40c) so hopefully that will sort it out.

Thanks for the help guys. :)

i found that cpu=z gave me wrong results in Vista i have a dual boot and so it cannot be wrong in what im trying to say. XP shows the right correct clock spped not Vista.

the cooler is not going to to do much except give your cpu better cooling perfomrance not improve anything else and to clock a bit more for sure.

i have no alternative.. im lucky to see the fault as i have a dual boot of xp and vista! whatever comes up on the bios is def what ** running. So chill mate maybe an another update of cpu-z will fix this.

i was about to say check in the bios the fsb and multi. that will give you the true clockspeed regardless of what anything else says and CPU-Z. In bios my RAM is calculated at 888mhz yet CPU-Z has it at 891mhz

Also my CPU speed is about 8 mhz more in CPU-Z than in bios

Ok I got a new cooler and the temps seem ok. BIOS was telling me it was about 35c but speedfan tells me that its about 55c. Is speedfan known to be wrong all the time?

Also CPUZ still tells me that it's running at 1.6Ghz. I checked the BIOS and all the settings there are fine and it can't be speedstep as that is turned off.

Anyone know that could be making it slow because something is. I havn't installed any new hardware or software and there's nothing else using the CPU.

I really don't have a clue on this one. :(

There's three settings you have to disable - SpeedStep, EIST and another one that I've forgotten.

It really shouldn't be a problem though. Run Orthos or another demanding app and you should see the speed jump to 2.4.

you wont belive it but i just upgraded to a P35 board ASUS one and boy it needed some updates done on my drive i wish i did a clean install of windows but any how after getting it working i too now get 1.6 lol in cpu-z in XP too and Vista!! wonder what it could be ,. i await an updated cpu-z currently on 1.40
