Apparently my new internet connection is running at 2.506 meg according to my BT Home Hub.

Is this even possible?

My upload is currently 488k.

what connection are you paying for ? with max adsl you get up to 8mb, the line is tested over the next week or so and then you connect at the most stable speed, with mine being 7mb. i assume this is what you're talking about ?

How long have you been on the Max product? ie. "Up to 8Mb". The sync rate will always fluctuate.

When I had ADSL, my sync rate was higher in the mornings and lower in the evenings because the SNR dropped to a level that the router could not sustain. It's quite normal. Eventually it should settle down.

It will always sync to the highest speed possible at the time and it'll carry on doing this forever. The 10 day 'training period' is just for BT to gain statistics about the line - they don't force the line to a certain speed or anything.

Do you know how MaxDSL works? If not, have a read of these links:

The default target SNR is set to 6db, so whenever your line syncs, it will aim to keep the SNR at 6db and let the sync rate go as high as it possibly can. If you don't understand this then the links mentioned before will help.

On most lines, the SNR fluctuates depending on the time of day due to interference. To take my old line as an example, if I resynced during the day, say around 11am, it would sync at 3600kbps or thereabouts. When it got towards the early evening it would keep dropping and eventually settle down at around 8pm at around 3000kbps.

If the router was left alone (hard to do since it was an unstable piece of crap but that's a different story) the theory is that it'll stay at that sync rate and everything will be fine from then on.
