I found this Celeron lying around and was wondering if it would be an improvement over the 1.7 P4 I have downstairs?

there are no pentium d's for 478, he asks if its a normall celeron or a celeron D, the pentium is a pentium 4 and there arnt any pentium d's for 478, unless you mean the family, but if im correct there aren't p4's family D at 1.7 ghz...

EDIT: the 1.7 pentium has to be a wilamette, wich sucks tbh, go for the celly, if u can get a 1.6 ghz northwood p4, would be a lot better, but if i were you i'd avoid both the celly's and wilamette like the plague.

Just looked at it and I have no idea where I got those specs from. It's a celeron 2ghz no D or M. Spose the old P4 is faster then.

The 1.7GHz P4 has to be a Williamette.

The 2.8GHz Celeron-D is a Prescott.

The P4 has the shorter pipeline, the Celeron the higher FSB, L2 cache size is equal at 256KB, Celerons L1 and L2 are more advanced, Celerons branch prediction is more advanced.

Go for the Celeron, clock for clock they will be almost identical in performance.

People renember the 1.7 is a wilamette, with just 256kb l2 just as the celerons, so basicly i think a celeron would be better, if it wouldn't be a willamette but a 1.6 or 1.8 ghz northwood then the p4 would be a lot better, but i always stayed away from willamettes because they were worse than p3's, but personally i think, even tho i hate celly's, in this case the celeron is better....

1.7ghz p4 has to be willamette as they never made a 1.7ghz northwood p4...northwoods started at 1600 and then missed 1700 and jumped to 1800

I think the Cele only has 126kb l2 according to the CPU - 126/400

The P4 has 256kb l2 - 256/400

How much would you pay for either the Cele or the P4? £10 or less?

No idea how much they are worth but the P4 would be quicker. I found a 1.7 outpaced a 2.4 Celeron (both 478) by quite a margin a few months ago.

Sorry, i only read the first post, my bad :D

If it's 2GHz then it's a Northwood Celeron with 128KB L2.

The Northwood Celeron is probably the worst CPU made in recent time. Keep the P4, it'll be faster in anything that matters - as Duke said.

Older P4's can't go for much on "well known auction site" so if you're after a cheap upgrade it might be worth looking at. What chipset is on the board?

//"well known auction site" - why do you say this instead of exxx? :)

I bought the Cele for £6 with HSF. I mainly bought it for the HSF as I want to build a cheap rig to stream music into my studio.

The P1.7 came from the PC downstairs which I've had since the release day of XP.

I'll probably get rid of the Cele as I've got another P4 2.2Ghz 512 - 533 which I'll use. I wanted to build something on the cheap. If I had some money I'd maybe upgraded my 939 rig to AM2 but alas no money. :(

Just a little correction, there are 1.7Ghz Northwoods, mobile cpus. Basically only difference from a normal NW is no IHS and lower vcore and many desktop boards run them fine. Also, mobile Northwood Celerons have 256k L2 cache, so if it was a mobile it'd be better than the 1.7 Willie.
