Stepdad has a 670 and my 760 as a spare.

specs:

6300
gigabyte 970a DS3p
8gb RAM

Is it possible to run the two together? A new motherboard if needed, is fine.

Or could the 670 be used generally, gaming etc and the 760 specifically for Cuda etc and not require an SLI bridge? Can get one also if needed.

No what you want to do is not possible. For SLI you need a new motherboard yours only does Crossfire.
You can not use 670 and 760 in SLI they are different spec cards. You can also not use the 760 just for Cuda. You could use it just for physx though.
Best thing you can do is sell the 760 and try and pickup a 2nd hand 670. You see them in the MM every so often for about £80-£100.
Although the Intel 6300 is a bit of a limiting factor too.

Cuda does not require SLI nor matching cards.

I'm running 2x980 + 1x780 in the same system at the moment. No SLI bridges are used.

App's use one 980 for display and automatically use all three cards for processing when needed. Games however would not take notice of the additional 2 cards.
