Hey,

I have a new PC and want to connect it to the internet.

The current PC is connection to ADSL Modem via USB and cable to telephone line.

I would like to connect another PC to use the internet? What would be the cheapest option? The second PC is used for gaming.

Cheapest's probably connect the two machines together and run ICS (or similar). Needs the machine in the middle to be on for the other one to get an internet connection though.

Least hassle's get an ADSL router.

Cheapest way would be to buy a network crossover cable for under a fiver, plug in each end to the network port on each PC, enable Internet connection sharing on the pc with the modem and done. However the main PC would have to be switched on in order to get the internet on the gaming machine.

cheapest option is to buy a Crossover Networking cable

and link your 2 PCs together (providing both have network cards)

then use Windows Internet Connection Sharing to share you connection

this however is not the best method, as PC1 needs to be switched on for PC2 to get connection

the best way is to buy a wired ADSL router, priced about £50 ish and network the PCs using this

that way either PC can get the internet regardless of what the other is doing. Its also faster as well, as its stand alone, so doesnt use your CPU cycles to do it all :)

i vote router too, cuts out the hassle of leaving 1 pc on all the time and if you have another pc in the future, it's easy provide internet access for that too.

Wireless ADSL Modem/Router! You get (with most): 4-wired Ethernet ports, built-in ADSL modem & 802.11g/b wireless Ethernet for an additional 10+ users with WiFi equiped machines.

Best investment I've made in the last couple of years. One of those 'does exactly what it says on the tin' products without much fuss/hustle/etc
