I'm not much of a network guru, but what's the best way of running my laptop and my PC online at the same time from the same Virgin line?

Do I need to buy a cable router or can I get away with a simple switch?

A router is the best way. A switch won't do it.

Another option would be to put a 2nd NIC or a wireless card in the PC then connect the laptop to that connection and bridge the two on the PC together. That's a bit of a messy way of doing it though and your PC will need to be on for the laptop to get net access.

The linksys wrt54 routers are very popular, and the wrt54gl model is especialy worth getting. The main advantage of these over netgear routers is that should you ever want some extra features on the router, you can put 3rd party firmware on it and get features that would not normaly be available on a home router.

I just replaced my Netgear with a Linksys WRT54GL + tomato firmware. Its great. I like all the graphs and stuff that is on there :)

once you get it..

and internet is working, go to 192.168.1.1

go to the update firmware page, also, download this..

http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato/

Firmware
Tomato_1_21.7z
» Use this for most routers.

open the 7z file with either 7zip or winrar, extract the WRT54G_WRT54GL.bin and drag to desktop

then point the upgrade at that, leave it do it's stuff

once it's rebooted, go to this part of the menu

Administration->Configuration->Restore Default Configuration->Erase all data in NVRAM memory(thorough)->OK

then setup the wireless if you want it :)

I don't know about your cable company (VM I presume?), but our local company will happily dish out an extra IP, meaning a switch is perfectly sufficient.

Will VM not do this? Although, as already suggested, you're probably better off with a router.

^^ What benefit will that give me over the normal firmware?

stability & uptime, much better interface to it

the technical list is huge too, but i doubt you care about that atm :)

plus it's easy to do, just follow what i said in the other post

Router arrived. The earth pin on the power adaptor was broke so I've used a netgear one I had laying about, has the same power rating so should be fine.

Anyway, I now can't access the net using FF3. Google chrome and IE7 work fine.

Any ideas?
