Another option would be to put a 2nd NIC or a wireless card in the PC then connect the laptop to that connection and bridge the two on the PC together. That's a bit of a messy way of doing it though and your PC will need to be on for the laptop to get net access.
Any cable router will do the job, assuming your cable modem has a network connection as opposed to USB. Just connect the modem to the uplink port and your PCs to the LAN ports.
The linksys wrt54 routers are very popular, and the wrt54gl model is especialy worth getting. The main advantage of these over netgear routers is that should you ever want some extra features on the router, you can put 3rd party firmware on it and get features that would not normaly be available on a home router.
I don't know about your cable company (VM I presume?), but our local company will happily dish out an extra IP, meaning a switch is perfectly sufficient.
Will VM not do this? Although, as already suggested, you're probably better off with a router.
Router arrived. The earth pin on the power adaptor was broke so I've used a netgear one I had laying about, has the same power rating so should be fine.
Anyway, I now can't access the net using FF3. Google chrome and IE7 work fine.
